Default Time Together (#600)

These days the words from the old Harry Chapin song "Cats in the Cradle" often come to mind when it come to how much time I get to spend with my 29 year old son. He and his wife live not far from me but they've both become very busy people working at a rather large local software company that starts with a "M" and ends with a "soft". Its become quite rare that I get to spend enough time with the "JD", but last Saturday was our day together.

The weather was unseasonably warm for this time of year and best of all it wasn't raining. He shows up in the early afternoon in his pride and joy, a shiney black German import that I have to admit is a delight to drive but we decide instead, to warm up the Chevy and go for a little ride in dad's hot rod and maybe grab some lunch.

As I ease the 57 out of the Garage I'm keeping a close eye on the temperature gauge wishing she would come up to 180 degrees a bit faster. I tell him how cold blooded she's become with the new engine and cam set-up and if I kick the choke off too soon she just plain won't idle. The car stalls as if on cue. I restart her and we're off. JD compliments me on how clean she is so early in the season and I assure him that the first coat of wax has already been applied. We talk car care products. As we arrive at my new favorite local Mexican restaurant, we're still talkin' cars, horsepower, turbos, and new tec. versus old school. Over lunch our talk changes to frustration over our jobs and how much of your life they take up, we talk about the music in our lives or the lack there-of, he'd like to start another band "just for fun" I agree. We pay the check, get up to leave and as we walk back to the car we agree on how attractive our young waitress was. We're off again and I'm trying to find a slower way home to maximize our time together. We cruse down the main street of my hometown and then back to my house but all too soon he checks the time on his fancy high tec. phone and he's got to go. We exchange "bear hugs" in the front yard vow to reconnect soon and he's gone.
I close the garage door and think about our time together...

I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember the exact year my Father passed away but it seems like an eternity. Working on my 57 is kind of hard sometimes cause he helped with several parts of her, like it was hard to change the outside mirrors to the stock mirrors and location, he had come up with a pair of the tri-bar mirrors and we had them mounted on the fenders, there's always something that reminds me of him.

I really need to spend more time with my sons.

Thanks for sharing your day

Boy can i second that sentiment. My dad passed away in 1983 at the age of 39. I would love to talk to him again. Now i would love to tell him how much i really love him and miss the advice i used to get and that i hated at that time.

David enjoy every minute you can with your son.

I consider myself pretty lucky . I get to go to work with my dad and my brother everyday .

We have our own small concrete company , its just the three of us and we work together great and have a wonderful time . I am very very thankful for it.
