I'm about to put my carb back on top the manifold. The last time, I coated the gasket with #1 gasket sealant. Since then, I've heard that the sealant isn't needed. Can I put the gasket under the carb without the gasket sealant? If it really is needed, is there a preferred type of sealant?

Noooo. I never use sealant on my carb gaskets.
