Default Exhaust Fumes In Car

I have put on new tail pipes, new trunk gasket, no exhaust manifold leaks and I still keep smelling exhaust fumes inside the car. How are the exhaust fumes getting in the car? We went to a car show today and the wife is not happy...!!! Needless to say it could be dangerous anyway with the carbon monoxide inside as well. An ideas or suggestions????I'll try anything at this point before she closes the check book due to the bad smell....George

Yes...matter of fact the the old tail pipes were turned down at the rear axle housing and that is what I thought was the problem. But I was wrong the smell is still strong. In 15 miles with the windows up you can't stand it without fresh air. Do you think the exhaust is coming thru the trunk gasket, you know the exhaust is twirling around behind the car going down the road. At least when it is cold outside you can see it.

George....Decided to post this to see what others might think....Here's my red neck idea:If you have access to a lift, you could squirt a little oil in the carburetor with the engine running....Then raise the car and block the exhaust at the ends with a potato or something.....You should then be able to readily see where the exhaust leaks might be.

Just thinking out loud....Getting close to Easter....No crusifications please.

You sure it is exhaust and not a rich condition at the engine? Years ago I too had a problem with "she who must be obeyed" and smells in the 56. I found that my ignition was not up to par and was running too rich. Electronic ignition, better coil and an O2 sensor fixed the problem.

Running a MSD setup, wires, coil, 6AL. Believe it or not I think it may have been my trunk out of alignment. The line up pin beside the trunk latch was interfering with the closure of the trunk therefore the trunk gasket was not sealing properly and the trunk was out of adjustment in general. I will see if that was the problem this weekend. Also, I sealed off the area where the back rests against, virtually airtight now in that area. thx gkk

Tell her with the high cost of gas, it is an added feature they put in so you can smell your money burning up as well as just driving in the car.
