Default 605 or 670??

Ok, I just saw an ad for a 670 steering box for my 57.

So, I am going to ask the obvious question??? What is the difference between the 605 and the 670? I found a site that has "quick ratio" 605's, Manuals, and 670's.

I would like to have power steering, but need to find out what is "best".

Thanks
Ep

Ep the 670 is supposed to be the latest/newest box out for tri fives. I haven`t used one but have read some good reviews of it. Some on here have installed them and should chime in later.

I couldn't find much on a 670 box, but I think you are talking about this one...

If so, it will be a huge upgrade from the 605 box. Also, the CPP 500 box will also be way ahead of the 605. The 605 steers a tri-five too easily, doesn't have the "road feel" of these later boxes.

"NOTE: Some other gear boxes out on the market have been produced in China.

Our gear boxes are made by DELPHI and are infallible. You are insured with Quality!"

The above is from the ad in the link. Aside from the bad English, they are correct. They are modified Delphi steering boxes. The CPP box is made overseas, and is patterned after the Delphi box. It's also a bunch cheaper. Take your pick.

I built my own 605 many years ago and threw on any old pump I had handy and it works just fine and it didn't cost $700. back when I did mine I couldn't scrape $700 up if I had a posse so I had to go the economy route, I have the instructions for the build and install if you're interested.

I built my 605. Total cost was less than 100.00. Works good for me. Used box was 35.00 and a pump with brackets from a 66 Impala for 35.00. Rag joint from a 86 Trans-Am my brother was parting out. But I enjoyed building one. I have always thought 75% of the fun in these cars was building them.

"I have always thought 75% of the fun in these cars was building them."

I'm definitely on the that theme.

But I think the introduction of these boxes is a pretty big deal. Complaints about 605 boxes and the way cars drive with them is close to the top of the list on these boards.

Doing things for myself lets me afford things I want for the car that I may not otherwise get. So you have to pick and choose depending on your desires and goals.

Yep, exactly. I vowed to never dip into the family budget on my car. I have a file folder that I put all the reciepts (I didn't lose). One of these days I'm going to run a tape and see what I spent.

I agree with Rick L. I have had both a self modified 605 box on my 57 and a 605 box from McGuaghy's. I haven't liked the feel of either one. I was debating a rack & pinion setup or the new 670 box but, since I have everthing set up for the box, I think I will go that route.

Well, it's like my whole life. For years I ate the neck when we had fried chicken. Then I found out about the backs being so much better.
