Keith, I think a lot would depend on the intended use of the vehicle. If it's a daily driver, and you're going to rack up lots of miles, then I'd say use / invest an additive. If it's going to be a weekend cruiser, and not being driven many miles, personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

Experiences vary. Not many will have valve seat recession, but it does happen.
I had a 283 head from a 67 Nova go bad. Found a swap meet replacement, it and the other head, never a problem. Pay me now or pay me later - or maybe never. |

How often should you add the additives.
Do you need to add additives if the octane is 92 94 or 98 |

My L6 235 Blue flame engine is all original, so I use one bottle of Gunk lead additive to two fill ups. given that you don't run it below 1/4 tank, and high octane every 3rd fill up. and I use lucas oil zinc break in additive the engine oil in my L6 engine, on every oil change. They keep her humming and no clicking, or knocking. Smooth as glass.

Everytime you fill the tank you should put the recommended amount in as well. I have found that running my stock 283 on BP's Ultimate 98 runs super smooth. Any octaine less and it seems to be labouring. Mind you it comes at a cost of 13 cents per litre extra than std.
