I have a saginaw 3 spd w/overdrive in my 58 cameo. Having trouble finding sources for the seals for the OD solenoid, OD control shaft, speedo gear and shift shafts. Any help here? I have a spare unit I'm practicing on. The manual says to remove the solenoid turn it 1/4 turn and remove. I did that ok, but it doesn't seem to want to go back in the same way. Any tricks to putting it back in? I havn't removed the control shaft yet, any advice for that? Thanks , Jack

The shift shaft seals are available, but I believe the solenoid seal and lockout shaft seal are discontined. Actually, the lockout shaft seal may be a simple O ring, but the solenoid seal was like one of those lip types with a spring. You may get lucky and find a gasket set somewhere, like on EBay, but be sure you get these particular seals with it. I think OD gasket sets are still be reproed, for the original earlier type anyway, but without the solenoid seal.
The solenoid should go in the same way it came out. The idea is to get that ball at the end of the solenoid shaft into the slot of the lockout pawl and then twist the solenoid so that the ball stays engaged. The lockout pawl slot is either horizontal or vertical (either parallel or perpendicular to the centerline of the trans); I can't remember off the top of my head, but you'll want to be sure the flat sides of the solenoid shaft ball are oriented the same way before going into the solenoid mount. When the solenoid's all the way in, twist to the proper position and bolt on. The control (lockout) shaft is held in by a pin. Drive the pin out and the shaft should come right out. The shaft goes back in just as easy. Last edited by WSSmolick; 08-29-2007 at 09:01 AM.. |

Thanks for the info. I did find the solenoid seal at www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com for 7 bucks. Lockout shaft came out easy. Bad news is the seal is very much like the solenoid seal, metal ring with seal attatched only larger. I havn't found any kits that have the seals. only gasgets. Where do you find the shift shaft seals? Jack

I have yet to reassemble my Saginaw. It's still in the disassembly stage (about 3 years now), so I don't know what kind of seal the shift shafts take. I know the original '55-57 trannies used O rings for shifter shaft seals.
