Guys you must also remember to keep triclor away from titanium parts as it can cause surface inclusions that can lead to part failure. That means you don't use any cleaners containing triclor on any Titanium. I know not many of you have any titanium parts but just a word to the wize.

We had some very sick people where I worked my tool and die apprenticeship (Nortel) years ago , back in the day when you could smoke at work . In an adjacent area to ours , a large pit degreaser full of hot Tri-chlorethylene was used to clean metal gear blanks , and the company had a **** of a time figuring why only SOME of the workers were getting headaches and nausea . Turns out , when the Tri-chlor fumes are sucked in (burned) through a cigarette , one of the side-effects was Phosgene gas poisoning . Luckily we had no fatalities , and shortly thereafter , the whole plant suddenly "disappeared" to Mexico (where workers are expendable) . Keep your heads up , and READ THE LABEL . Be safe . Bob

Right you are , lugnut ; the very same product Iraq had over 60,000TONS of , stored in a bunker. Its only use was as an instrument of war , for mass poisoning in a drift cloud , dating back to 1914 . I might add , not ALL brake cleaning products have Chlorine derivatives (trichlor- or tetrachlorethylene). We use a brake cleaning product made by Kleenflo Tumbler Corp. that boasts being chlorine-free , containing heptane and propanol instead and it works well. Bob

Read the label - follow directions - if in doubt don't use it - better to be out the cost of the chemical than to be crippled or dead. Also remember many chemicals (gasoline, cleaners etc.) are easily absorbed thru the skin as well as inhalation.

Yes, Phosgene gas is very deadly. It is also occasionally produced in the making of meth by accident during the "cooking" process. I have seen it eliminate three grown men in a motel room during this process. One at the stove, one who never woke up in bed and one in the shower. It didn't appear they had a clue and died where they inhaled the gas.
As a gas it just needs the right ingredients/circumstances to come together and become extremely deadly. Blake |
