Default 56 bel air ignition switch wiring

While trying to hook up a neutral switch I have disconnected 2 wires. One is red heavy guage and the other is pink to purple in color 18-22 guage. On the back of the ignition switch I now have 2 open male terminals and 2 wires not plugged in. The word SOL seems to be between the 2 open connections. Are there 2 wires for the SOL?- I think the heavy guage wire goes on the outside terminal and the smaller wire the inner towards the center terminal. I disconnected the smaller wire thinking this is the violet wire that goes to the neutral switch-but that is probably wrong-I just don't know at this point Any help will be appreciated

The heavy (12 gauge) red wire goes on the double "bat" terminal with the black wire. The heavier (16 gauge) violet wire goes on the "sol" terminal by itself. A smaller pink wire may be on the double "acc" terminal with the larger pink wire. ....http://www.trifive.com/garage/56%20C...anual/12-6.gif

Thanks for your help Don, All I have open is one terminal on the battery side of the switch and 2 terminals on the SOL and 2 wires not connected. My problem is I don't know where the heavy red wire goes since there is already a red wire on the double Batt terminal. (there are no black wires connected to the bat terminal). But a harness with 3 wire plug does contain black, red and green wires and connects to the ignition 1&2. The SOL has a double terminal for 2 wires. so I have 3 open terminals and only 2 wires left to connect.

1 wire is pink and thicker heavier gauge wire than all the other wires
2nd wire is thin and is also kid of pinkish color I think I might be color blind

I'm confused thats why all the questions

I think the lableing on the switch may be confuseing you. The "bat" and "acc" terminals are the only ones with double terminals and the "acc" terminals may only have only one wire. See picture in link. Do you have an ampmeter installed? Someone may have replaced the heavy black wire with a red wire??? What color is the wire that is on the starter solenoid along with the large battery cable? It was originally a 12 gauge black wire that went to the "bat" terminal of the switch. The large red wire on the "bat" terminal goes to the fuse block.

Yeah the black bat wire is red. I was able to put the wires back where they go -thanks to you. I tried a temporary hook up for the neutral switch the car would start and immediately stall in park. I jumped the violet wire to the top of the neutral switch and a dark blue wire from bottom of neutral switch to the SOL on ignition sw. It got late so I had to quit. During this process I must have disconnected a wire to my alarm system it says faulty door or trigger but still works-just no siren. I'll try to figure that out tomorrow. I'm curious how does the neutral switch know the car is in neutral-I would think the shifter or something mechanical would have to be part of the equation?

The neutral safety switch is operated by the shift tube inside the column. A tab on the switch moves the contacts in the switch when the shift tube is rotated.
If the engine is dying when you let off the start position, "ign1" wire is not connected corectly or the ballest resistor is bad. I betting that "ign1" wire is in the wrong place.

The car starts and runs perfectly like it did before I tried to hook up the switch. It is when I had the switch hooked up it would start and die immediately.

That sounds like you have the switch hooked to "ign1" instead of the "sol" terminal and the switch is adjusted wrong. With your foot on the brake, try starting it in different gears with the switch hooked up.

Don's advice is spot on.....Be sure the car is headed out of the garage and not into it as well.
