Hi everyone, I read from time to time, that cars are sometimes sold without a title. This seems to be an issue with some. I'm led to believe that in some states, no title, no registration, but this really doesn't seen right. Here in N.Y., to register a car without a title, you have to have a bill of sale, a photo of the VIN #/plate and a graphite tracing of the VIN# on paper. Have an insurance ID card, fill
out the proper forms and of course pay the fee's involved. Submit all to DMV and they will give you a new registration (title) if the car is clean. I did this not to long ago with a '61 Impala convertible I bought with no title. I know alot of members are from various states and was wondering what your registration laws might be if you knew. Did you ever have a problem trying to register a car w/o a title? Thanx, Carmine. |

I have bought cars in WI and KS without titles. In both places, the state troopers inspected the VIN and gave me a form to take down to the dmv for a new title. No big deal, but I understand that other states can be a lot pickier.

I had my 57 for 7 years before I got a title for it. Texas title, notorized in OK, signed over to my brother, who never took the time to get it in his name. I left him use my wife's car to drive to town to the store, 3 days later I got a call he wrecked it. He jumped the curb & drove over a dozen tree stumps, $2,200 in damage to car. That was in 1970, he gave me the 57, if I would take $400 off the bill, never saw him again for 7 years!! ![]()

carmine i did the same but the regi they give you can not transfer the name for one year after that time they then send a transferable registration in your name so have to keep the car for one year.

In Arizona you need a title and notorized bill of sale unless the state it comes from does not title it due to it's age. Also all out of state cars are inspected by DMV for ViN..(In Az. if they could they would title lawnmowers. Have a 150cc motorscooter and have to go thru emissions every year, kinda feel stupid sitting in line
)

have never bought a car wthout a title, so don't know how hard (or easy) it would be to get one. i'm just not going to buy one without a title, don't need the b.s.. i think thats up to the seller to get and go through the bs.

I can tell you in California you have to have a title. I bought my 55 with just a bill of sale out of Oregon. Cal. DMV said no dice go back and get it titled in Oregon then once its titled their I will have to go through CHP to verify all docs & to make sure it's not stolen. Not really a big deal, but the 55 has seemed to changed hands a few times before I got it. In in order for me to title it in Oregon I now have to have a bill of sale from the last registered owner on record. ( which is not the guy I bought it from). Working with DMV in Oregon I now have the name of the last owner on record and the address is good, but I'm having a **** of a time getting this guy to help out and if he doesn't help I'm basically at a stand still. This is one of the reasons I never started the project, just don't want to sink money into something I can't title.
