Default Roof rail weatherstrip

Hi all , hoping for some advice !
I've removed the roof rail weatherstrips from my 56 4 dr hardtop and there's a putty like material or a sealer of some kind stuck along the bottom of the drip rail . What would this be and is something like 3m caulk strips something I should use before installing the new strips ?

Thanks in advance

Stuart

Mine has the same stuff, we used to call it "dum-dum" in the shop. It does a pretty good job of sealing although it does dry out in time. I would use 3m products , they work !

Yep, dum-dum. Hadn't thought of that in years....

I have purchased a pair of roof rail seals for my 56 4 dr hardtop but can't get them to fit as the screw holes do not align with the holes in the car and also the windshield end of the seal is a completely different profile to the seal removed from the car. Each screw hole is about a half centimeter out. What am I doing wrong ????? Does the end of the seal need to be trimmed to fit ? Surely not given what they cost !
Please advise urgently
Also do I need the roof rail stops ?
Thanks
Stuart
