My 57' 283 has a stock 2bl that doesn't respond to rebuilding. Meaning I tried and still have problems. I'm thinking I should upgrade to an Edelbrock
4bl manifold and carb which will set me back around $400. I could just get a new 2bl for around $170. Any recommendations on which way I should go? I've had the car for about two months and have so far installed a new gas tank due to laquer build up. The car sat for ten years with leaded gas in the tank. |

Ed,
Even though I rebuilt the carb I am still having problems with backfiring and missing. I took the carb off my 56' Bel Air and tried it and it runs better so I am sure it's the carb. I guess I'm really wondering if the difference in performance will be significant. I do plan on keeping the 57' but realistically cannot afford to do a restore to all original but I do want to make it a good driver. Don |

This is pretty much what you really want. Me personally I'd put a four barrel on it just because that's me but if you just want to putt it around town find a two barrel and replace it. I'm sure you can find one reasonable, heck if I had one you could have it. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

As it turns out I just found a used Edlebrock carb and manifold for sale at a good price ($100) and hopefully I will buy that tomorrow. I'll then get a rebuild kit for it and see how I do.
I think that is the best way to go. Thanks for the replies. Don |

Yeah thats what i'd do aswell.
Mine was the first V8 i'd owned with a 2 barrel carb and after driving it i couldn't have ripped that carb and manifold off quicker ![]() Now i've just got to get the rest of the car back together ![]() |
