Default My '56 Convertible Story

I got a Paper Route when I was 14 years old and saved up enough money to buy a '58 Nomad, with a 348, 3-Speed when I was 15. On my paper route one day at a repair garage, there sat a beautiful all original '56 Convertible. Black Paint, Black Top and I believe a Black and White Interior. This was in 1968. Upon a closer look, I was dis-appointed to see that it was an Automatic and also noticed 6-Cylinder Emblems on the Front and Rear. Not good when you are 15 Years old and already owning a 348, 3-Speed. Now if it was a 265 V-8, I could always switch it over to a 3-Speed or better still if it was a 6 Cylinder, 3-Speed I could always drop in a V-8 in time. But the double-negative was just too much and I let the deal slide.

Now the purpose of this story?

I could have had that car for $295.

Dang...What a shame....I can remember changing several from auto to stick and from six to V8....But, like you I don't remember ever having to do both at the same time.

A convertible at that price still would have been hard to pass up though...I'm thinking in today's dollars that would have been $2500 or so....Of course, when you are 15 that still is a chunk of change.

Well, in a way, I did. When I was 16 I wanted to get a wrecker and haul in all the '55-'57's I could find, and there were plenty out there. Most real cheap, some free. Only problem was, I didn't have any land, lol.

That all changed 20 years later. I mentioned in my Introduction thread, that I sold my '56 Nomad that helped me buy this place I'm at now. The next month after we moved here, I started hauling in all the '53 to '73 Full Size Chevys I could find, although most of the '55-'57's at that time were either gone or too expensive to buy.

Today I have over 75 Chevy parts cars.

Yeah, although there have been only about a dozen through the years anytime I got a car that was too good for parts, I would re-sell for someone to restore. Anything '70 and older I have now are definitely "parts cars". Of about 100 cars I've bought through the years, I would safely say that about 3/4's of them would have been crushed by now. I've actually saved some that were on the way to the crusher.

You realize that if you had bought that car and kept it inside stored away. The value of the "investment" would have outpaced any interest you could have earned on the same amount of cash. It would be worth 100 times that "investment" in today's market.

Yeah, you're right.

Like most of us, I would have loved to have a Wal-Mart size building in my back yard back then. Although there are some out there. I just saw one online somewhere, where a guy in the back woods of NC has a bunch of Hi-Performance cars stored and there is a guy around Radford, VA that has a whole bunch of cars in a real nice building although many of them are foreign cars.

I had a 80 or so house afternoon paper route in the early 70's that made about $40 a month I started when I was 12. I bought a new Honda 125 for $600. Sure wish I had known I could have gotten a car for cheaper! My payment was $43.81, I have no idea why I remember that number when I've never been able to remember my anniversary date.
