Default Fuel return line questions

I have a stock 454(230hp) with a mech fuel pump that has a return line on it. I don't think the pump will fit when I put the engine in, so i got thinking about a 5-8 psi electric fuel pump. Will it work? Do I NEED a return line?anything else I should know?
Thanks!

You should be able to use a mechanical pump. Their are several types available that don't have a return line that will work. Not saying to buy this one, just an example. Go to your local parts store and look or ask about a pump for bbc 396-454.

You can use either a mechanical or an electric pump without a return line. I have an Mallory electric in my '55 with a single line. My pump is mounted back near the tank. I added some rubber to isolate the pump mount to minimize noise. Some people don't like the noise. Be sure to add filter before an electric pump. Also, you need to consider how it will be turned on and off. Some people include a safety switch such as low oil pressure to stop fuel flow it the motor in off. There are also some roll-over-switches used in some factory cars. Maybe someone can point some out. I don't have one of those. Personally, for a driver, I would use a mechanical if it fits. That's what I have in my '40 with 450/425 hp crate engine.

So if I don't need one, what the point of it?

Helps eliminate vapor lock.

Chrysler cars had a port for a return line in the fuel filter.
The 70s Chrysler style fuel filter is an option for anyone experiencing vapor lock.

If running a flathead Ford mill & having vapor lock issues simply load the fuel pump to carb fuel line with spring type clothes line pins.

Some cars get along nicely without a return line. Some don't.

The problem with returnless systems is the fuel moves relatively slowly through the fuel supply line. In warmer weather the fuel line, and the fuel within, absorbs heat from the exhaust system and the road. Sometimes the fuel "boils" in the line coming from the tank. Once fuel boils, there is no going back to liquid, hence the ancient term vapor lock. The engine quits. The vaporized fuel must be purged with liquid fuel. Sometimes it takes an hour before the systems cools and the engine can be started. Flathead Fords were notorious back in the day. I know firsthand.

Boiling? How can that be? Well it's because fuel in your line will be under suction, not pressure. Your engine-mounted pump is sucking fuel out of the tank. The boiling point of water can be raised by putting it under pressure. The opposite happens when water, or gasoline, is put under vacuum. The boiling point is lowered. An inherently bad situation.

By having a return line, fuel is constantly moving, and warm fuel is returned to the tank and cool fuel is on it's way.

GM, in around 1983, started putting fuel pumps inside the tank, making the entire fuel delivery system pressurized. No more vapor lock.

So then one of those little 5-8 psi electric pumps near the gas tank is really the way to go?

You can go the way you want to go. But with your stock bb, the easiest and and best way to go is use a mechanical pump. Don't make things difficult.
