Another reason I held off is that the other two Nomads I had at the time were 'turquoise'... '55 regal turquoise/ivory and '57 Tropical turquoise/ivory. I love turquoise but having 3 Nomads all turquoise was a little much..
Having two Turquoise Nomads already, I can see why you held off on the purchase. The Nomad though it has a fantastic body, required a lot of mechanical freshening, but that is just nuts and bolts. Your decision not to buy it worked out well for me as I had just the year before sold my previous 56 Nomad. It was painted an incorrect Teal-Green color, had the wrong color interior, and hot-rodded with a four speed. Also, it was an East Coast car and had lots of bondo. Here are two photos of it.

Are you coming to Bowling Green to show it off? If so, I look forward to seeing your car and meeting you.
Gary,
Unfortunately, no. My wife is having ankle replacement surgery and I will be her nurse/ helper during that time.
Today I worked on my '56 in preparation for the drive to Bowling Green Thursday morning. Weather predictions are that we *might* get a little rain one or more of the days (if it's like here it threatens rain every day lately, actually rains for a few min every other day or so?)..
Anyway, I stole the not-yet-installed lower tailgate weatherstrip intended for my '57 Nomad project and used it to replace the deteriorated one on my '56 driver Nomad this afternoon. Here are a few photos of the process... I removed the old W/S, pulled out the plastic push pins and tossed them, cleaned the area with 3M adhesive remover, then installed the new W/S. The one I used had the formed corners, metal brackets for the corners, installed push pins in the rubber. I think it was a T&N but the bag wasn't labeled. After installation of the W/S I put back the screws at the corners, and 'lubed' the W/S (with Petroleum Jelly). The Tailgate is being held out farther now with the new W/S, but maybe that's good. I'll see how it works for holding out H2O before I worry about further adjustment.
I'd previously replaced the upper liftgate W/S and the aux W/S, and had my liftgate straightened, so we'll see how it works on this trip!
PS. The curved wide flat end of a medium size prybar worked pretty well for 'pushing' in the push pins...

Gary,
I know that you realize that no matter what you do, the tailgate/ liftgate will still leak, as they leaked when they were brand new. But then that is just one of the prices of admission for owning a Nomad.
You are right Steve... but we do have fun trying to minimize it .. right?
and I keep a stack of towels in the cargo space for trying to soak up whatever comes thru..
I generally don't drive it when it's going to rain, but... the Smokey Mtn show and the TriFive nats are 'have to's... along with the CNA convention, but they are generally not close enough to drive the Nomad...
ENDLESS HOPE: I am 'hoping' I can do a good enough job on the '57 to stop the leaks... or go fast enough that it doesn't have time to come in...

another thing I've seen people do is to put putty in the channel gutter between the lift gate and the roof. The water will have to overflow the gutters at another point rather than travel to the two openings for the lift gate.
Not a cure all by any means. A little here and there makes a difference.

C57Heaven: I've done that myself, and probably will again Thursday if it's raining when we leave for BG...
A 'similar' fix which is a little more permanent is to remove the rain gutter from the upper liftgate and add a gutter to the rear portion of the roof which *might* change the situation a little bit.. and that's probably what Chevy should have done... make it similar to the SD roofs?

The angle of the liftgate makes this all but impossible. That is why it is the way it is.

Ebay down here is not completely dead. Today I scored a Wonderbar for the '56 - should say I stole it.
I'll get it to a local guy for am/fm conversion.
