Sitting at stoplight mid 60’s in 62 Impala with 327 built by local race shop. Had a 327/350 cam and a ZOOM speed equip decal on the window.

2 punks pull up beside us in a new Mustake. One hollers out “ha ZOOM, what’s dat mean ?”

My buddy replies “Get your wallet out and you’ll find out what it means”

Punks’ heads snapped straight ahead and eased off from light 🤪

I read somewhere the air flow thru an open element top filter is far better than the typical round 14 open filter. In fact the entire 14 round could be blocked off and not affect flow thu the top feeding the carburetor.

You guys are making far too much from the air cleaner deal.

The dual snorkel air cleaner is not all that restrictive. Other stock air cleaners are a single snorkel and many have a tiny inlet - those are the ones that are restrictive.

The air cleaner tops with an element in them might make a difference on an engine that makes far more power than a typical street engine but aren't going to make a difference for most street engines. The inlet area of one of those filter tops is less than a 14" diameter x 3" tall round element - so no you wouldn't want to run that only.

The whole deal is simply about area for air flow. Measure that and make your comparisons.

Last thing, I don't believe any L79 engine had an open element air cleaner from the factory. The ones that have them now are because someone lost it long ago.

Motor Trend TV had an episode of Engine Masters that demonstrated that.

Just a note in reference to the 66 Nova L-79 air cleaner. The position of the inlet snorkels was to pick up air from the updraft in the open shock towers directly in line with the snorkels. The base is specific too. The 3 and 9 o'clock snorkel air cleaner was only available in 66 Novas with the bad to the bone 327/350 hp L-79 rare ZI code Nova 327. The oil filter was recessed . I recently sold my 66 SS Nova and two of these rare engines . One went to a fella restoring a true L-79 Nova with serial numbers only 90 away from my engine. A happy marriage to car and engine as they were both built on the same day. I still have an original that I had rechromed before they reproduced them....its became wall art having too much money invested . the repros are half the price. Additionally the 67 Nova L-79 , very few produced , maybe 11, was labeled 325 hp and used a chrome air cleaner without snorkels.
