Yes, your talking about large Mack Trucks which are not from the Auto industry, I work with all the OEM's who make fuel tanks for the Auto companies, and they are blow molded HDPE regardless of gas or diesel

Not saying that the aluminum is bad just correcting a statement about the OEM's fuel tanks and materials, that they are not made out of aluminum.

I work for Ford Motor on Medium truck (F650) Gas tanks are steel, diesel tanks are aluminum. We never use aluminum tanks with gas

Not trying to argue here just noting that this generic statement is not correct. Maybe for F650's and larger trucks, but the 1500,2500,3500 and more from the OEM's are blow molded HDPE for Diesel applications as well as Gas, yes there are some steel tanks out there also.

Here is another thing to think about with aluminum.

Look at the construction of any OEM steel tank. It has several stamped ribs to stiffen it - otherwise the weight of the fuel is going to bow the bottom surface of the tank - a lot.

It's not really practical to stamp or roll ribs into a fabricated tank of any material. So a well made fabricated tank is going to have ribs welded on the inside, and it's going to be made from much thicker material. As an example, my Rock Valley stainless tank is made from 14 gauge sheet, where an OEM steel tank is 18-20 gauge.

Another think about tank construction is that OEM steel tanks are stamped in two similar halves with rounded corners and the weld line is at the center of the tank's height. You can't do that with a fabricated tank with the typical custom sheet metal shop's tooling. The rounded corners reduce the stress from what a square corner's stress is. And an even bigger deal is that the weakest part is the weld. Welding a bottom corner puts the biggest stress at the weakest part. This is a big deal with aluminum.
