FWIW, with regards to Fans... I wound up going Electric and couldn't be happier. I have a stroked 396 that hit the dyno at 530 at the crank. I live in Louisiana and wanted to be able to sit in a parking lot at idle with no concerns. I can now sit and wait for to pick up my kids from school on a 100F day with the AC on and never get over about 205/210. I ran a basic AL radiator in the 6cyl position for other reasons and used the classic Taurus single fan. It pretty much fits the radiator with very little mods so it is shrouded that way and thin. It's a very strong 2 speed fan you can get it from summit or rockauto or wherever. I use a Dakota Digital Fan controller that is excellent also. Low speed kicks on at 190 and I believe HS kicks on at 200. It's adjustable. I was skeptical as we had always had cooling issues even with the basic SB before we put this motor in. I figured I would need a cross flow system etc. Instead I tried this and it was very inexpensive compared to a crossflow and never gets hotter than the fan settings. There are lot of answers, but this worked for me. I thought I would only use clutch fans with shrouds, but now I would say I would only use electric.

I've lived in TX and FL... FL was consistently more miserable. However, I suppose if you want HOT--- I went to Las Vegas in July it was 123* in the afternoon. It "cooled" down to 100* by 8pm... I like it warm but that's a bit much.

crash1068: good info. Thanks. Right now I'm just trying to make sure this car can handle simple cruising around town. It's for my Dad and he's probably going to drive 15 minutes to get coffee, hit a show or tool around... I don't see prolonged, long distance, or "sporty" events. If there are cooling issues I guess we will have to look at a bigger rad and electric fans...

Sounds like some fun for your Dad. Really, just a fan shroud and either a good mechanical or electrical fan makes all the difference in the world assuming the radiator is in decent shape. We tried a new high $ radiator on a 65 BBC vette and did little. Put the original fan shroud and mech fan on it and worked great.

Enjoy the ride...
