I'm new to the forum so please forgive me if this question has been answered before. First, a little background.
I'm 61 years old, and am modifying my sixth "shoe box". It's a 1957 210 2 DR. sedan, currently powered by a 235 inline, with a saginaw 4 speed (3.11 first) and a 3.70:1 positraction rear end. It also has a modified 605 power steering box, poly eurathane (sp)? bushings in all suspension points, stainless steel brake lines, stock rebuilt drum brakes, etc. etc.
However, I'm an ex dragracer, so I need more horsepower and torque. I have a '74 400 small block I wish to put in place of the six cylinder. I have a stock cast iron v-8 bellhousing and a muncie 4 speed. I want to retain the stock chevy 4 point mounting system, along with adding a rear transmission cross member and mount.
My question is: Will the 8 inch harmonic balancer, used for 400's, clear the front motor mounts as used on the 265-283? Surely, some one in this forum has built this combination and knows the answer.

Regarding using the original 4-point mounting system and adding a transmission crossmember and additional 5th mount...... I did that on all my small block powered '55s back in the late '60s and early '70s...... And will do that with the stroker small block I am building for my '57 sedan as well.
On the '55 - '57 front engine mounting brackets...... I have run them with an 8" harmonic balancer (torsional dampner) in the past. And though it will be internally balanced and will not use an external balance 400 dampner...... I will run an 8" (neutral balance) dampner with this engine as well.
The front engine mounting brackets will require minor clearancing on a bench grinder to gain clearance for the 8" dampner. I just clamp each mounting bracket into a large pair of vice-grip pliers and carefully work the interference point a little at a time with a lot of trial fitting until I have around 1/8" clearance to the dampner. Give 'em a good coat of engine colour paint and you're good to go.

I have always wanted to build a 400. It certainly does have stump pulling torque. I love to hear the "car guys" talk about engines and for that matter anything about the car only to think, these guys vote also. They are definitely among us.

I plan on selling my 041 heads (Drilled for steam) with valves, dual springs with guides, double roller chain, comp am and lifters. Good for a 350. [email protected]

I agree with you that the HP should be around 400 or more. We are building a 350 that is rated at 420 HP. Hope you are able to run it through the 1/4 just to satisfy curiosity if nothing else. 12's would be great, but 11's would be even better. Happy Chevying,
