Default Oregon 55 Gasser

I put this car on another thread with some frame questions but thought I should just do a build thread.
Car has been sitting in the same spot since 1976 near my home. It took some doing and many moons to talk the owner into letting it go. The windows were down for several years with 70s shag carpet so it rusted the floor pans, other than that its pretty good. So here we go on the build.

Most of the original paint in the trunk area..

Floor pans removed, braces were good so I sandblasted them.

Had to try the 9X28 slicks off the 56 on for size.

Floor was good at the rear brace back so I will overlap it 1/2 inch and spot weld then seam seal. I am installing the floor in left and right sections from the toe board. Painted the brace wells with POR-15 and will spray the lips with weld through primer.

So loking at the last pick particularly the rockers I ould put the new floors in but not weld them to the rockers. once the floors are in get the inner and outer rockers swapped out. that rocker looks like it has holes in the top, from my experience if the outer rocker is bas the inner is too. JMHO

Thanks for the tip but it is not as bad as you might think. I pulled the 4 oval plugs on top of the rockers and the original silver coating is in there, only bad spot is that 2 inch section on the outside. The back side is solid. I will just section in that 2 inch spot on the outer rocker. All of the edges that attach to the floor pans were also good.

Thanks and happy new year!
My new years resolution was to have a gasser..
I am waiting for the floor pans so I dove into the front sub today.
For 8 ft of 120 wall tubing, 3 ft of 2 inch DOM, a 2X2 of flat plate and some angle iron was 60.00 not bad. I started today by leveling the car out and taking some measurements of the stock setup. used a plumb bob and some pen paint and marked key places on the floor, also made a diagram for reference.

Next was cutting the front suspension...a bit unsettling...but for a short duration..

I guess we are committed now...

I forgot to take a picture but I pie cut and welded the top of the new rails a bit so they would go into the old frame farther.
time for mock up....

I was concerned with getting the sub in the right place so here is what I did.... I measured the frame at the original jig points from front to rear and found the center. I then used a plumb bob and marked a dot on the floor at each place. Then I took the tape and lined them all up front to rear. I tacked the new frame rails parallel with each other then measured the center at the graft point and all the way in the front and plumb bobbed it to the floor in alignment with the original chassis center. I had plumb bobbed the two holes on the original core support mount and marked them on the floor previously, the center was right between the holes so I knew I was good to go after checking the level on both sides and the front.

A time saver was using the double marked ruler, I just set it at the same number on both sides and 24'' was my center on the chassis.

That's always a bit daunting to do those frame cuts! Looks like you've got a good plan, and it will come out great!

Next was fitting the graft section. The rails are set to the inside and bottom of the original frame rails. The original is taller and wider so I cut the top inside straight back and pie cut the outside then tacked the inside, clamped the top down and tacked it, then fit the outside and tacked it. I will probably make some plates for the joints on the sides and a longer strap front to rear on the bottom. I also drilled 2 more holes near the idler arm holes so I could weld them through later. Not going to weld it all up until I mock up the axle. I ordered the speedway kit with Chevy spindles and Wilwood brakes. I wanted a Chromemoly axle so I called Jim Tinsmith and ordered that at 51'' The axle was 400.00 but speedway deleted theirs from the kit and reduced the price by 185.00.
