on my 348 install i angled the column, the clamp/retainer on the fire wall was cut and offset a small amount, the column came out of the dash at a very slight angle, the dash chrome "exit point" was the fulcrum, no one ever noticed it and i couldn't feel it when behind the wheel. nothing was in a bind.

Keep us posted Cat Dr....I putting together a 348/409 installation article, as we speak....I found these pics of where the LH exhaust manifold needs to be ground down to clear the steering gearbox....Hope this helps.

Unhappy

Thatís how I added the clearance for the steering box. I hope it works. Project at a snail pace right now. Got to get ready, pay for sons upcoming wedding to a great young lady. He was hopeful car would be finished so they could take wedding pictures.

Because the 348-409 engine is longer than a small block (length is the same as a big block), that means that SBC headers are not all that adaptable because of the spacing between the exhaust ports. Also I doubt that the height of the exhaust ports is the same, the angle probably isn't the same, and the width across the two heads is almost certainly wider. Adapting a header from a 58-64 car might be easier.
Moving engine forward 3/4" with solid mounts work fine for my install

As far as the headers ...........one guy used the 409 exhaust flange (from Show Cars).......still had to do some cutting and fabbing but he thought less work than a tube kit like I had done.

I'm curious as to what everyone thinks of using the Earle Williams mounts to offset the engine to the passenger's side....Do they have enough adjustment so the manifolds or headers will clear the steering box? I'm aware that you can't go too far or you will have problems with idler arm clearance on the other side.
