There was one that had a lopsided [email protected] 28 3/8 it was on driver side moved it to passenger , then passenger was 28 1/2Ē with a longer spline moved it to driver side it was stiff to plunge in , as earlier I didnít want to force it but at this point some of the splines could have been rolled? Rotated the driveshaft while trying to push the final 1/2 of bearing in. Took a 4lbs beater and give it an abrupt tap to the axle face and she seated. Tried to put in gear and couldnít turn axle ...... loaded tires and installed lug-nuts and left in gear tire is firm no spin Both sides. Very promising.......

From seal to pig was 25Ē on both sides

Had two leaks from Muncie pipe plugs that I drained and re sealed while it was up....... now completely ready for more fuel and some pavement! I will crawl it out driveway tomorrow afternoon

Dutchman's site says 28.187" length is correct, so maybe the axles need to be trimmed? Too long can contact the spring inside and take pressure off it.

Well I just fired her up and no fix still same as it was. Guess Iíll gel her apart and see if clutches are in there with the steels I believe at one point the seller said I didnít need the additive because there were all steel clutches which makes sense if itís spinning as well with no friction to catch steel on steel to me would be slippery....... easy enough to pull Iíll get the proper setup for stock 9.3 and get the fabcraft gospel as well might be handy? Then Iíll see about two fresh Dutchman axles to round things off with elongated splines. Not going to hurt at this point......... as a quick fix I can install my single wheeler and stock 29 splines to get me at least rolling til parts come in

1971BB427 Iíll get a look at the 31splines again and see whatís going on?

First off...you got some heck of a nice gasser!!! Been couple years I last time checked your progress since I haven't been 'here' lately but man your 57 turn out nice!
Second...all steel clutches...what! I'm no super expert on these but from my hat I think that can't be a good idea from the first place.
Friction clutches are parts which are made the way that they worn no matter what...if your rear end has 'all metal' stuff, that metal is floating around with oil all the time...just thinking out load here

Your gasser rock!

Long axle. Has a 4 1/2Ē slot
All spline inserts are in good shape in the hub no damages to either side
It seated with the beater yesterday and there was no spring to contact to cause unloading,

Figured that Iíd install the single wheel with the 28 3/16 axles and it all fit great

But of course where did I put the 5 on 5 rims? Iím exhausted and need to crack open the Posi unit........ itís the early style that bolts together.
Iíll get some pics of it when opened up.

I couldn’t wait it’s eating me alive !
A first for me well they are steel. I think if anything I need more to make tighter?
Now which way does the bevel go can I get clutches local and what’s my torque on the barrel and main caps to put back together

I'm with Finn210 as to needing clutches. I've never heard of steel on steel, and can't imagine how it can work? All the gear lube, plus metal to metal just seems like a great way for things to slip, and not grab.
I'd be shocked if any place that sells auto parts would have the clutches, but it's possible another clutch disc set might fit and work? I just couldn't tell you for sure. Might call Dutchman's and ask them if they know what else can interchange with the 31 spline 9.3 Olds?
Don't hold me to it, but torque is probably the same as other GM rear differentials of the era. Might be another question for Dutchman's to answer.
I sure miss having Dutchman's Axles just 3 miles away! Sad day when they moved to Idaho!

I would rebuild the entire rear end and make sure everything is set to spec by you and your quality of work standards are applied to remove any future surprises.

So with that being said I’d be inclined that the Belleville springs are installed backwards, I pulled out other side and both are cupped towards the spacers and clutches and not allowing them to load..... I flipped them and it is raised 3/16 from seating the Posi body together. Still just playing with it it’s my first 9.3 internal dive.
