Couple years back two cars slam on the brakes in front me and I slid my 96 vette up under the car in front me. I took it to a friends body shop. One my main concerns was that I did not want a big estimate to repair it for the insurance company and end up with salvage title for this car.

Well, I did a little research today, and not everything that was being said about this was correct. While it is correct that GM does not have an approved repair for this crack, that is only part of the story! While they do not have an approved repair for the crack, they do have a replacement crossmember available as a repair part, and an approved repair technique for the replacement of the part. It is not a job that can be done by most body shops, but there are shops that do have the specialized tools and training to do this work. The total cost of the repair was only $7600, so it is unclear why the insurance company totaled it out, as they were made aware that the repair could be made with the blessing of GM, and all warranties would remain intact. My guess is that the insurance company did not want to mess with something they did not understand, but I would bet that the owner pushed them into totaling out the car.

Here is a link to an expert analysis of the incident, as well as a good background on how the chassis is constructed.

That $7,600 number ($7,675 to be precise) was for the other damage underneath the car NOT including the frame crack damage. That repair was left blank on the estimate.

So, the damage amount listed on State Farm's auction web-site is not accurate. It only lists the $7,675.

Also, this is what the now ex owner stated. It doesn't sound like he pressured them. My experience with insurance companies that pressure doesn't influence them anyway. Maybe if you get a lawyer they might but it sounds like they didn't do that.

"I thought I should update the group on the final word on my car.

As I had mentioned, on August 23, my insurance company stated the car was totaled in the morning and then switched to saying the part may be available in the afternoon. I was on the phone with them almost every day trying to figure out when they would make a decision and they kept blaming Chevrolet Engineering for not returning their call. One of my last calls had a representative telling me that they may have someone weld the crack. I had to ask him multiple times about how Chevrolet would stand by their warranty and how I would be protected from liability if it later broke. I agree there are welders out in the world that can probably do a repair that would be better than factory, but who is going to stand behind it from a legal perspective.

Finally, this last Wednesday, I received a call from the insurance company who finally came to the conclusion it was totaled.

From there, everything went great on finalizing the disposal and payment for the car. They gave me what I thought was a very fair price for the car, plus tax, registration, etc. They arranged to have it towed from the dealers the next morning and that afternoon I had my papers to sign and a check deposited.

I did ask about purchasing it back for salvage and my insurance company's policy is to not sell a car back to the original owner when it has structural damage. I do know where it went to a local auto auction, so I will see what it brings for a value."
