He is correct, probably should have been changed a couple of times in a 99 model with DOT 3 fluid.

I have believed in changing it for years and the newer the car the more important it is to do, hell I change hydraulic fluid in my log splitter too.

Default Question

I have changed brake fluid in my'57, it was rust colored. I replaced it with the "Good Stuff", whatever number that is.

The newer the car, the more important it is to change the fluid. With the advent of ABS, traction control, and stability control, the need is real. A very small amount of water can cost you thousands of dollars worth of repairs in these systems. That being said, a modern brake system has a rubber bellow that seals off the fluid and expands into the master cylinder to take the space of any fluid that is lost. This pretty much prevents any moisture from migrating into the master cylinder. A lot of old cars did not have the rubber bellow, the fluid was exposed to ambient air all the time. These cars absorbed moisture constantly. After 1962, GM did not make an open-air master cylinder any longer.

The new non-hygroscopic brake fluids, like DOT 5, can not be used on modern cars, as it will not work with the rapid cycling of the ABS and traction control solenoids. It will cause air bubbles to form and degrade braking.

Think about this next time you reach for that bottle of DOT 3 on the shelf of your garage to top off your master cylinder. How long has this bottle been sitting on the shelf, and how airtight was the cap screwed on the bottle?

I too have a European car and it does call for the brake fluid to be changed.

You should be able to look at the service books and see what is included in the service at the time, will indicate which fluids are to be flushed out.
