Some years ago I had a '67 Camaro with a stout 327 and headers. For exhaust, I put a single stock transverse muffler with dual inlets and dual outlets.
The car sounded great. A nice mellow rumble without the noise.
I am thinking seriously about replacing the Hushpower mufflers on my '56 with some type of stock mufflers.
Like others have said, I think a healthy engine sounds good no matter the muffler. May be exceptions to this though, but it sounds reasonable to me.

Opinions differ on what "sounds" good, but I think a muffled modified engine sounds much better than a stock "wanna be" engine making noise. Working around screaming engines all day probably has something to do with my opinion though.

Thumbs up Flower Masters!!

----------Personally, I like Flow Masters myself!!----Both my 56 and 55 have them. I have the four chamber one's on the 56, and five chamber Big block series one's on the 55!!---Both cars have pretty potent small blocks, and I'm always being told both cars sound great!!-----The five chamber ones are quieter!!milton

Good point. Everyone has a different opinion of what they like to listen to in an exhaust tone. I've noticed that some cars sound good to me, but that doesn't mean I want to hear that sound all the time. Like Milton says, Flowmasters always sound good, but a lot of cars with them sound alike to me.

A few years back, I had a neighbor up the street with a newer Corvette that had an expensive aftermarket exhaust system.
Another neighbor on the other side of me had an old 40's Ford pickup with a stockish flathead engine.
One day I realized the two vehicles sounded exactly alike.

Remember the more surface area meaning the longer the muffler the quieter it will be.

Not to be argumentative, but surface area alone has little to do with how a muffler works to quiet an exhaust note. Its how the muffler is designed in such a way to cancel out the sound waves. To use Flowmasters as an example, the sound waves bounce off of the reflector panels (chambers) and cause the sound waves to collide into each other and therefore cancel each other out. So, the more chambers there are, the more noise cancelling there is.
