Default 454 super/turbo charge question

I have a 14015445 454(low compression 7.9 or 8.5:1) and got thinking, would a low compression engine be a nice plant for a low buck blower addition without a lot of other work?? What are all your thoughts?

Usually cast pistons wont stay happy for long under forced induction.

I wasn't thinking big psi, maybe 4 or 5 psi? Just something small.

It doesn't take much boost to overcome the cast pistons, and it's easy to make a permanent mistake on the timing (or fueling) with a blower or turbo.

A small Weiand, B&M, or Edelbrock supercharger might work for a little while.

From someone that has built and driven a supercharged engine, my advice is, do it right, or don't do it at all. Half-azzing anything is never a good idea. There is a general formula for building a street/strip supercharged engine, and a cast bottom end isn't in it.

We can agree to disagree on this.

My '34 Coupe has a GM goodwrench stock motor with a blower cam and a 671 @ 10% under-driven making 5#. B&M sells bolt on blowers for stock motors and they aren't blowing up. 5# or less and cast will be fine with proper timing.

I wouldn't be going to the strip every weekend and beating on it and expect to live long though. Common sense.....

Don Hampton (Hampton Blowers) and I had this very conversation and I am repeating what he said.

I have no boost when just cruising around.

The AMX, on the other hand, has good internals as it will be at the track.

the thing is at 5 psi you are only gaining a small amount of HP because it costs HP to turn the blower. Not worth it to me.

I did this exact thing with my stock 454. I knew i was going to build a blower engine but was going to be a while until i could afford the parts. I purchased a 6-71 kit and threw it on the stocker, 10% under-driven. Picked up 75hp without doing anything, on my chassis dyno. Drove great and didn't have any issues. Was a blast around town.

When the new engine was done, i put the car with the stock engine with supercharger on the dyno and beat the crap out of it (over 100hp gain). Finally floated some valves which smacked the pistons bending a few. That was at 6k rpm on stock springs.

I'd have no problem doing it again and not abusing it, even if i had no plans to build a new engine.
