Default Header selection??

SBC in a 57-150 sedan. Close to time to buy headers for this car. Currently the front end sheet metal is all off the car. Like the looks of fenderwell headers but I realize they may interfere with PB booster and possibly need for a smaller front tire for clearance.

Any other pros/cons to using or not using fenderwell headers versus conventional headers.
Engine is a 283 with World Products heads, 4 speed w/ stock clutch linkage, 600 Borgensen PS box, and pwr brakes if I can squeeze in the booster.
Comments appreciated...........Jerry

Can't really comment on fenderwell headers...they tend to be bigger for drag cars.

On a 283, I'd look for headers with 1 5/8" primaries.

Had the same issue when looking for headers for RAISED D port & angle plug heads.

Patriot Exhaust Manufacturer's Part Number H8055, 3/4 length, 1 & 5/8 tube.
Fits raised D port aluminum Vette L98 heads with casting #113, ZZ4 & ZZ6 in a tri-5 with auto trans & column shift.

Raised D port gaskets = Fel-Pro #1470 gasket

A member here had issues with the coating, mine look 100% but have yet to fire the engine.

IIRC Summit has uncoated for 2 bills.

5/8" clearance header tube to 500 gear box.

to do fender well headers, you have to do some butchery to the inner fender and it is not easily reversible unless yo replace the inner fenders. just not right for a street car IMHO

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info and replies.
Yeah, I know the fenderwells have to be whittled on to fit f'well headers. Mine are nice and originals and not sure I'm ready to cut on those.

As you and other have suggested I may just go with a set of 3/4 length Patriots
in 1 5/8". Nice and trim and so far I have not seen or heard any negative comments.

Thanks again, jerry

The other problem with fenderwell headers on a street driven car is they exit outside the frame - so you'll have difficulty routing the pipes to the inside of the frame where the mufflers should be.
