Default Cast-Iron Powerglide Linkage help!!

Hey All!

I just drove my car 300 miles from Seattle to Spokane and had zero issues. All of a sudden, went to shift into reverse and nothing, I was still in low! I luckily had just stopped by at a friend's house where he has a lift and we put the car up so that we could look at it. I immediately thought my transmission was out, but that is not the case at all...

This may get complicated, but I'll try to explain as I am at a loss for what to do! Everything shifts fine from P-N-D-L, but when you shift into reverse nothing happens. Underneath the car, all the linkage seems to move fine, and the attachment to the transmission moves up as if it's going into reverse, it just doesn't go far enough! All I had to do was barely nudge it with one finger and it would lock into place in reverse. While the car is running, if I do the same thing (just push with my finger), the reverse gear engages smoothly and firm. So, the transmission is fine. Unless, the linkage moved internally and somehow got out of position? Is that possible?

So, I added some washers to the linkage so there was less play and things got closer, but not matter what I do I cannot get reverse to work. I adjusted the post up and down for about 3 hours and no matter where it was, reverse would never work, the only thing that would happen is that triangular piece of linkage would flip entirely and cause everything to lock up. I have it adjusted perfectly so that the rest of the gears are exact, but the reverse still does not work properly... Does anyone have any suggestions? Does this make any sense at all??

If you know a lot about the factory setup of these cars and the linkage, but my explanation makes no sense, please send me a PM and let's exchange phone numbers so that we can talk. I am wondering if something got bent somehow? I don't know...

Thanks!

It could be that your transmission mounts need to be replaced.

This is a very common problem. You need to replace the rear motor/ transmission mounts. This will lift the rear of the engine and the linkage can once again be adjusted so that it works.

There is another reason (provided that the rear trans mounts are good) that the reverse can't be selected. I found that this happened to my PG, same scenario.
On this sheet from the assembly manual http://www.trifive.com/garage/57%20C...nual/302-7.gif if you look at view 'C' there is a linkage part # 365972. These have a tendency to either wear or bend so that insufficient travel to select reverse is obtainable. What I did was remove that linkage, and straighten it slightly in a vice making it about 1/8" longer. That's all it took, I might add that my mounts were brand new.
