1957 service manual refers to their posi units as early and late units as there was a design change.

Positraction FIRST BECAME AVAILABLE Dec 56.
Consequently, there are LOTS of questions and issues and old wives tales about 55-56-57 cars and the availability and installation of positraction in these early cars.
I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT claim to be the expert on these early rears, what fits and what does not fit, but I've been involved with and rebuilding these early rears for over 50yrs, and I am quite familiar with them.
Some of the questions and issues that have occurred for so many years, have become so strongly accepted as gospel, that it is often very difficult to get SOME people to understand or accept the information which is correct.
If anyone has specific questions, I'll be happy to try to provide answers and information.

Now, back to the question of positraction availability in 56. NO, it was not available on ANY production car. PERIOD! BUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, there was a VERY SMALL handful of 56 Corvettes that were FACTORY PREPARED by Chevrolet for competition (ie, Sebring 56) with prototype limited slip rearends (called High Torque----------supposedly had HT stamped on the case). Unfortunately, I have never had the privilege of having one in my hands, nor has anyone sent me pictures of one, so I am not able to give details about these ULTRA RARE rears.

Tom, speaking of wive's tales and misconceptions, please settle this one for me.......did the FACTORY install any 4-speeds in sedans in '57? I know they were not an RPO.
Thx

Tom ive read all your info on the 55-57 rears very helpful. Can you tell me will a 3.55 56 ring and pinion work in a 57 4 series posi carrier? The gears are thinner in 56 as you know.

Thanks.

The 4sp in a 57 pass car was NOT an option, only in 57 Vettes AFTER Apr 9, 57.
IF, IF, IF a 4sp did get installed in a 57 pass car------------AT THE FACTORY---------------it most likely was a prototype or for R&D purposes. For one thing, there was NOT a 4sp shifter available for the pass cars, nor was there every any listing in the parts books for pass car 4sp shifter parts.
It is a known fact that SOME owners of new 57 pass cars bought, and had a 4sp installed by either the dealer, or by an independent mechanic. A complete 4sp installation kit/parts/shifter for retrofitting into a Corvette was available from the parts dept, but that shifter really was not compatible in a pass car.
This issue has been kicked around since 1957----------------------and as far as I know, NO GENUINE DOCUMENTED FACTORY BUILT 4sp 57 PASS CAR HAS EVER BEEN UNCOVERED. Soooooooooooooooo, what is the answer? The answer almost has to be a solid NO--------------------BUT, GM did LOTS of things behind closed doors, thus, who knows?????????
Would I personally accept a 57 pass car as a genuine, factory built 4sp car? ONLY WITH DOCUMENTATION NOTARIZED BY GOD HIMSELF!
Now, with all this said, this brings us to 58 pass cars built with a factory installed 4sp. This has also been kicked around since 1958. The discussion/debate/argument for a genuine factory built 58 4sp pass car is MARGINALLY stronger for a 58 than it was for a 57 4sp car. But again, there doesn't seem to be any BELIEVABLE documented 58 cars to support such an option for 58. One of the MOST SIGNIFICANT parts required for a factory 4sp car is a PLAIN collar for the steering column. None have ever been listed in the parts books.
