Today I pulled a 8.8 rear end at a salvage yard...
It had a nice aluminum drive shaft. I know there's an adapter for the rear that will connect to a a GM drive shaft, but is there a way to keep the Ford drive shaft and have an "adapter at the front?" I hope that makes sense.
Did it come from a 90s Explorer? I just put a driveshaft from a '99 2 door 2wd explorer in my 55 after a T5 trans swap and the explorer driveshaft uses 1330 style ujoints. My 55 trans yoke uses 1310 ujoints. Needs a hybrid 1310/1330 type ujoint. Autozone had them part number: 1-0134DL or Moog 353. And I'm sure you can get them from spicer as well - EDIT: found it: http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p46...ombination_u_joint_1310_to_1330_series_g.html

After updating to an overdrive automatic 200-4R, we had to source a slightly shorter 53 1/4" driveshaft, (our stock was 53 7/8"). You'll be able to tell if the Explorer shaft is right soon enough.
It's good you are shortening one side as the stock driveshaft tunnel is skinny and having a centered pinion is desired.
The link below is pretty detailed on narrowing an 8.8. Four part tutorial. Maybe you've already seen it? I purchased a used Ridgid 4" four wheel pipe cutter for my first tube swap.
