In a similar situation many years ago, I was behind a trailer truck crossing a long I-10 bridge near Pascagoula, MS... it was nighttime, heavy traffic at 70+ in both lanes.. and I saw something LARGE right in the middle of my lane.. quickly I calculated if I had room to 'dodge' it and I didn't in either direction... a tire would have hit the item and possibly flipped the Plymouth Voyageur minivan I was in with my family.. so I hit my brakes hard, centered up on it, and released my brakes just before I hit it (hoping the 'rise' of the vehicle would allow me to clear it), but it didn't... it slammed into the front crossmember and I 'scooted' the item til I hit the next joint in the bridge, at which time it went back to the transmission crossmember.. again scooting the item, over the next bridge section, and then it hit the rear axle (for another bridge section).. The entire time there was a huge roostertail of sparks flying out behind my vehicle (viewed in my rearview mirror)... ALL the cars around me were braking and moving away.. but it did me no good at that point... Once the car came off the item, I put the car I slowed and moved to the right so I could get over once I cleared the bridge (maybe another mile).. which I did.. by that time the 'engine lights' were on so I pulled into the rest area just off the west end of the bridge.. and called my inlaws to come pick us up. I locked up the car and left it until the next day when I called a Chrysler dealer to come pick it up. It didn't *total* my nearly new van, but it did require several days in the dealership to replace the front crossmember, oil pan, transmission, and rear axle (all complete)... costly for my insurance but not totalled.

I did some investigation and heavy thinking the next day and determined what I'd hit was the differential chunk from a trailer truck; I found out from a shop on the east end of the bridge that a trailer truck that evening had had it's differential replaced, and the 'removed and bad unit' was carried away on the truck laying on the 'apron' behind the cab... until it fell off right in front of my car! Imagine the pumpkin from your Trifive, only about 4-5X larger!

One more example that 'Crap Happens', and sometimes you just can't do much about it! Y'all be careful out there!

Got it !

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Man, that would suck...then again he did get a new car. I can just imagine the scrap yard salivating over this wreck!

Btw, the mark on the top of the front area must be a reflection. He posts the estimate details and there isn't any paint work listed.

I'm sure he took a big financial hit too.

Ever seen that Liberty Mutual ad about "replacing the full value of your totaled car"? Most insurance will fall far short. And if it has that kind of coverage it probably costs a LOT. The cheap policy on that Vette probably is more than most car payments.

So now he has a brand new 2018 instead of a 2017. Identical car in options except for floor mats which he took out of the old one before he gave it up.

Here's what he said:

"I came out just fine with insurance as they treated me very fairly with the value of the car and paid the registration fee and tax. With negotiations on the purchase, I may have come out even or slightly better than even. My only expense beyond this was my cost to fly one way to Chicago and stay at a hotel overnight to get the replacement car. I could have had it shipped, but my wife and I decided to make the trip."

If the insurance company treats you well then no harm. But what most people don't understand is that the car belongs to you not the insurance company. If the cost to repair exceeds the cars worth the insurance company wants to settle with you so they can sell the car.The salvage auctions bring ridiculous prices these days because the middle easterners will pay retaill prices for these cars because they don't have what we call salvage yards to support the body shops for parts. It.s called exposure per claim.Stop the rental car fees, stop the storage fees and sell the car ASAP.You can buy the car back and have it fixed. In this case I would have bought it back

His insurance company has a policy that they will not sell the car back to the owner.
