Default 57 inside door panels

I have replaced the outside door handles and when putting the inside door panels back on, the drivers side on the hinge side of the door, the nails keep popping out. The passenger side has a screw at the top front corner by the vent window, drivers side does not. This is the only screw in either of the front doors. Someone told me there were originally 3 screws to hold the panels on, one in each corner with the exception of the door lock knob. I like the no screw look, but I would rather have the door panels stay attached LOL. Can anyone confirm that the screws were originally used?

I don`t believe there were any screws in them originally. My sedan door panels didn`t have any originally.

Yes, to be like factory original, all front door panels should have three screws. They go at each bottom corner and near the top by the vent window. There's likely holes in both your doors in these areas, often several from past interior work. Many who restore interiors will omit the screws because it "looks better", but it isn't correct. The proper type is called a flush mount trim screw. It's a #8 Phillips with a #6 head, and has a small countersunk washer on it that just barely protrudes beyond the head. Just make sure you don't use regular trim screws with the larger washers. Those may be correct for other interior items (seat shells, rear ashtray/armrest panels, etc.) but NOT for the door panels. Hey Terry, Although I must admit I have seen more than one original unrestored interior where some panels did not have all three screws, and quite a few where the spacing was all over the map, the factory trim assembly manual clearly illustrates where the screws are supposed to go. So whenever I've done an 100% original style interior, I've always included the screws. But I make sure to locate them in the exact center of the curves, and equally spaced 3/4" from the edge of the panel. Dave

My original had the screws, looked odd like the panel had come loose so lets put a screw in to hold it in place.
It does look better without the screws.

I went old school and included the screws with the fitting of my new interior.

Thanks for the replies. I kinda prefer the no screw look. Is there any trick to getting the nails to hold? I was thinking of using something to fill the holes and then reusing them.

Default Panels

You can buy replacement nail clips, new ones may hold better.
