Do you know if the paint on the engine block is original factory engine paint?

It appears to be more like Chevy Orange than Chevy Red.

1957 265 engines started out at the beginning of the year as chartreuse engine color. In Dec (Flint) and Jan (Tonowanda) the engine color changed from chartreuse to red.

There has always been a question about what 1957 265 engine red actually looked like.
The motor was dirty and I could see some reddish/orange paint on it. Original or not, I don't know. Joe had it for 30 years. Maybe he could tell you more of what it looked like when he got it. I know I'm going to paint it a high temp. reddish orange. Already bought the paint, Carmine.

I pulled it out of my parts car and it looked the same when Carmine got. I'm sure it's factory paint. My wife refused to clean it.

I know, but I'll defer to Joe for the answer, Carmine.

Carmine;

Do you still have the engine at you place, or has it already gone to the machine shop?

If you still have it, and the engine paint has not been removed, would you be so kind as to locate a section of the block that has a good representation of the reddish orange engine paint and take some more photos of that.

The paint looks more like 1957 Chevy orange than it does 1956 Chevy red, but it is hard to tell from the pictures.

Thanks.

It's a '57 motor, why would the paint look like'56 red?

Mostly because there has never been, and I am not sure there ever will be, a definitive answer as to what color a 57 265 stick motor should be other then chartreuse for the early motor.

See post 2 where you will see the color referenced as red in the technical information bulletin. So I think that is where the question comes from.

When they went from chartreuse I imagine they would use the '56 red to distinguish the 265 for assembly purposes and orange for 283. Of course after '57 there would be no more 265s so it would be moot.

I would accommodate you in a heartbeat, sorry, but the motor went to the machine shop on Monday. Same day it was degreased and hot tanked. It's bare now. I'll go out on a limb and say that this motor was definitely orange. From what I recall seeing, I would never have called it red, Carmine.
