Default Cowl Tag

My original 55 210, assembled in Baltimore has the cowl tag painted body color (Neptune Green). Interesting there were so many variations.

Don't have a picture of it handy, will add that later.

Just a note: The cowl tag was installed and the firewall painted in the FISHER body plant, NOT the assembly plant... but there were a number of different Fisher plants as well which could have had different procedures.

After cleaning it, I clear coated it and it is back on the firewall unpainted. I left the firewall under it red primer as it was when I first removed the tag. Tom

Do you know what "TOP" and "ACC" (stamped near the bottom of the cowl tag) indicate?

TOP would apply only to a convertible if it had an optional color.

ACC refers to any factory installed options such as power windows or seats etc.

There would be codes stamped next to each as needed to indicate the option code.

That is the firewall from my 57 about November of 77. The car had about 40k on it. My Dad was the second owner (19K when he got it) and I am the third. This is a February Baltimore built car so the tag is installed under the wiper motor, the earlier position on the firewall. No paint on the cowl tag.

Technically fisher body plants are assembly plants. They assemble bodies and not chassis

.. No one is doubting that since the bodies weren't 'hatched'...

But the process was that GM assembly purchased the body (mostly complete from the firewall back) from FISHER (a separate P/L entity, although it belonged to GM in the mid fifties), then the *automobile* was assembled from the Fisher body, the frame, drivetrain, and front sheet metal at the GM assembly plant of which there were 10 different ones in the mid fifties.
