Default Insurance Coverage - Regular Use Vehicle

Hello Tri-Five Community,

I need some expert advice from this great group regarding insurance coverage.
I am in a rare case where my wife and I share a vehicle - her 2014 Ford Explorer - of which we are both on the title registration.

My '55 is our only other vehicle. Grundy, Hagerty and all other premier classic car insurers would not provide me with a policy as I do not have my own personal car for daily driving. It is all clearly listed in their policy and makes sense.

As a result, I have a policy with a standard insurer for the dreaded "Stated Value" essentially I get peanuts if something dreaded happens to my '55.
My question is - has anyone else in this community been in a similar situation regarding coverage?

Would the best option be go out and buy a cheap car to register in my name so I can quality for the classic insurance?

Thank you for any insight and advice.

If I were you I would just list the Explorer as your primary vehicle and the get some good classic car coverage. Not sure what you told them, for them to deny you and never heard of 2 people sharing a registration. Just go to the DMV and put your name only on the registration. I have Grundy and they just wanted to know if I had another vehicle registered besides my 55 chevy, they didn't get into anything about sharing a vehicle. Good luck, hope it works out,

Question Hmmmm

As some of you know I have been an insurance agent for 38 years and represent Hagerty here in Pa. Some rules are governed by the state Ins Dept the policy is issued in, so that may be the issue here. Could be a NY Ins Regulation but sounds kinda strange. The first question that comes to mind is What type of License plate is on the car Regular Passenger, Antique, Collector Classic etc. That has come up here that they would only issue collector coverage on a car that has specialty plates, or then it would be considered Regular Use. Not sure if you going through your household agent, broker or directly to the company but maybe you need to rattle a few cages and get someone on your side. Another consideration is the Explorer is it "Used to commute to work" or are you both retired? that may play a part that if it is used for work your only car at home would be the "55, so it may be considered "available" to drive when ever needed. Just a few thoughts.
Good Luck
Frank
