I just installed ac in my 55. When i added the condenser the temp went up in stop and go driving. My setup is pretty much the same as yours. Radiator behind the bar. I bought a danchuk steel shroud and used a 17 inch six blade flex fan I had laying around the shop. If that doesn't work I will go with a 6 blade solid fan.
It was a really tight fit getting the shroud installed around the fan and behind the radiator but I removed the belts from the pulleys and that gave me enough clearance to get everything in place. Then replaced the belts. I will test run it tomorrow.
How come everything I do is now considered "Old School?"
Ace, when putting the radiator and a/c in the v6 position, the condenser wouldn't fit behind the latch well. I probably could have shoe horned it in.
The fan and shroud seem to be working well. Good thing since my regular car just got into an accident yesterday and is now at the repair shop. I have used my 55 for commuting in 5 o'clock traffic so lots of stop and go. Temp stays under 200.I quickly will go down to 180ish once I get rolling. That 17" solid blade fan does a great job pulling out the heat. I even goofed around putting the car in neutral and revving up the RPMs a bit to see if it would bring down the temp... it did.
The A/C is not working right now because I had to disassemble some of the connection when trying to move the radiator. So now I need to get it evacuated and recharged. I expect the A/C to cause the temps to rise more, which will likely involve putting on a pusher fan for the condenser.
But hey.... so far so good! I'll count it as a win at this point in the game. The advice given to me here to get a new fan and shroud were absolutely the correct way to go. Thanks guys!

Hi Guys, hoping you can help. My 55 just arrived from Alaska... happy to see her again after 3 years. This was my Dad's car, he passed away awhile ago. Even though I have driven it the most, I have no idea what components it has in it.... yes I am embarrassed. But, I know you fine guys will become my hotrod family.
The car overheats when it idles or in stop and go traffic. Does not overheat when cruising down the road. I figure either A) The Radiator is too small or B) Not enough airflow on the radiator. I have included pics. I think I definitely need a fan cowling, but I have no idea what Radiator I have and if the fan is large enough. Please see the pics and let me know your suggestions on having this thing run cool when idling.
