Question 55 Just Arrived - What Radiator Is This?

Hi Guys, hoping you can help. My 55 just arrived from Alaska... happy to see her again after 3 years. This was my Dad's car, he passed away awhile ago. Even though I have driven it the most, I have no idea what components it has in it.... yes I am embarrassed. But, I know you fine guys will become my hotrod family.

The car overheats when it idles or in stop and go traffic. Does not overheat when cruising down the road. I figure either A) The Radiator is too small or B) Not enough airflow on the radiator. I have included pics. I think I definitely need a fan cowling, but I have no idea what Radiator I have and if the fan is large enough. Please see the pics and let me know your suggestions on having this thing run cool when idling.

Hope the pics work.

Cool

You've got air conditioning in that car. That's an AC condenser. The other cooler, the smaller one could be an oil cooler? I don't think it's transmission. Have you checked your thermostat? Do you know your water temp?

You may need an electric fan for a boost.

Yeah buddy, I was excited that it already has A/C. I think the other cooler may be a transmission cooler, but I do not know.

So you guys think a bigger fan.... 17" (is that the biggest I can go) and a shroud would help? Do they make shrouds that fit without being fabricated and look good?

I would like to avoid an electric fan if possible. Seems like it would be more difficult to install. But with the Florida Summers..... it might be a requirement.

I'm sure everyone else has pretty much covered it..
1) Need a shroud and larger fan.
2) Not enough air getting through the radiator
3) larger cooler is A/C and the smaller is a transmission cooler

Well, the issue is, when you use your AC, you'll be dragging even more heat across the radiator. Even with a lower t'stat setting, you may need more cooling. I suspect the other cooler is an oil cooler, to remove more heat from the engine.

If you know of a good engine shop in your area, you may want to drop in on them with that set up. Cooler is better!

How big is that fan. I looks like one used on car that had electric fan also.

Yes Bigger fan and shroud would help. The Radiator looks big enough.

Having all the other coolers in front helps it heat up. But with right fan and shroud you may find it works fine.

Something don't look exactly right about the fan blades in a couple of the pictures. Looks like they are overly bent, or is that just the way I'm looking at them?

Default radiator

I had a stock rad., in my 55, thats what you have , I also had heat prob,s lot of the stock ones would overheat in traffic. Cliff has the right idea, if you can afford it a bigger radiator wouldhelp a lot,,Dick

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like that fan would churn more air than pull it through the radiator.
That's NOT a stock radiator. It looks like a 4 core Desert Cooler.
Since it's not overheating going down the highway, the thermostat is working OK.
I agree, a shroud would help a lot, along with a different fan. The shroud pictured is available from Ecklers down in your part of the country. ....http://www.classicchevy.com/catalogs...roud&x=43&y=17
