Default Stupid Tailgate Retractor Question:

Okay, reassembling my tailgate and all of its components. Searched everywhere for a good image or clear instructions. On the retractor assembly, does the bracket face up or down when installed? Pretty sure there's a left and a right assy and that would be dictated by the orientation of the retractor.
I know I have a fifty-fifty chance of getting it right if I just put them in, but we also know that that's nonsense, one will ALWAYS get it wrong.
After study, it would seem that the retractor is well-centered in either position but I'm thinking that the retractor would be protected from spray, rocks, etc if the bracket faced down. I give. Somebody set me straight please.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! H.

I just reinstalled new retractors, cables, etc yesterday and I think my retractors were attached below the bracket (but I would not swear to it). I attempted to keep the parts on the same side of the car... I think the way it's designed, the retractor is centered vertically in the bracket, so if you swap the bracket/retractor from Left to Right, it changes the up/down relationship of the retractor. Note that the retractor is located in the forward interior panel, which is protected from wheel well splash. Does your car still have the rubber dust shields which the cable runs thru between the forward and rearward inner panel areas? There's also a 'notch' in that bracket that can face UP or DOWN depending on which side it's mounted on... I didn't notice a 'R' or 'L' on the bracket. Do yours have a label?

Incidentally, on a project I worked on many years ago.. I was provided this 'rule of thumb' by a contractor doing work for me. He said... "it's a scientific fact that when something can only be 'one' of two different ways, then if you just guess and install it, you have a 50% chance of being right, whereas if you 'figure it out' first, you only have a 10% chance of getting it right the first time!

There have been times when I believed they must have been right!

There is a cable guide hole above the rear tire look up/in from behind the splash apron.
IIRC I installed mine so the cable lines up with the guide hole.

There is a pic of a wagon with the right 1/4 panel removed here somewhere it shows the retractor / cable etc.

Made a mod to my cables the original cables had the end spring jammed into the rear cable guides. I sliced large washers, bent em open, put em over the cables, bent them back then a small tack weld @ the cut line.

Yep, I've seen that Nomad image. The 2-door wagon is a bit different as the cable guide hole is near enough to the retractor to easily thread the cable though from the retractor hole.
Unfortunately, when I zoom in on that image it gets too blurry to discern the position of the retractor.
Thank you just the same.

Easy mod, did that last night. Thanks for the tip. The retractor mounting hole has a dog-leg cutout, presumable for the mounting screws to clear when the retractor is inserted. That's how I installed them and they appear to operate without issue. H.
