Default 1039D: my 56 belair 4 door hardtop project

Here is the start of the car I have wanted for some time now....

This starts 39 years ago when I was 5. My dad owned a 567 chevy salvage yard called Hare & Tortoise Motors.
One day a 56 Delray 2 door sedan came in. It had shackles and some burned to slicks 60 series tires, at 5 years old this car was the coolest! We saved the car and it sat for years.. finally in 1993 I got it put together to drive. Its maiden voyage was to Banff Alberta for the 567 Western Canadian Meet.
I drove for 10 years, including my move to Austin TX for 7 years.
I came back to Montana in 2003, and parked it soon after.
all the OG rubber in the front end had rotted out, and a panic stop took care of the 10 year old master cylinder....
So there it sat for the last 13 years, outside, waiting to "be fixed up someday".
A friend of mine decided that he really, really, really wanted it, and at the same time I came to the conclusion that I had had my fun with it, but wanted a 4 door hardtop much more.
After exhausting every kind of google search for 1956 4 door hardtop for sale, I spent about 4 hours on craigslist searching every listed city from Arkansas to California. I decided this one in Yucaipa Ca. looked like the best one to do the trade.

My friend went to Ca, did the deal, and trailered the 4 door back for the trade.
this one does not have an engine/trans but we worked out another trade for the difference to get this one up to my perceived value of the Delray.

This car is a nice dry California car, it does have some rust through in the rear roof corners, but should be an easy fix.-Condition wise I am right about where I was with the Delray (it had a rusty tail pan that never got fixed) most of the stuff this car needs is the same stuff the Delray needed.-
The cowl tag shows it was originally solid red with a black and white interior.
It has EZI glass and a electric/washer wiper.
It had a 265 Power Glide.
It also has the accessory bumper guards.

My goal is to do a resto-mod similar to the car in my avatar, only Sierra Gold, and Adobe Beige- basically stock on the outside , lowered a little, and more modern drivetrain(discs, 350/4 speed). Probably the hardest part is going to be the switch form the black and white to the Sierra Gold/Adobe Beige inside and out.

This will be a slow build, I have 3 projects in front of this one, but I will update this as progress occurs.

The Delray: I regret losing the Wonder Bar, but I do have a 56 Bel Air radio delete plate, And over the years I have decided that I do like the 56 Bel Air dash trim better than the 55 trim....

A fun pic of the 4 door coming home, I guess it was snowing in Ca. when they picked it up.
Vin tag is a VC56L, and shows that it was built on Wednesday Nov. 5th 1955.

Ive never owned a 56 chev. 4 dr htp. A friend had one 265 two bbl auto. It would turn 75 MPH in the quarter. Yours looks to be a good car. Are the collection in the background yours also.

yep, there are some cars left from the old yard, I have a 56 Canadian Pontiac 4 door hardtop, and an American 56 Pontiac star chief 4 door hardtop, my 57 belair sedan, and about 20 60-66 trucks.
the Delray had a 265 2bbl and a 3 speed I was surprised how fast it was!, I can't wait to see what the 350/4 speed will be like.

Is the Canadian 56 Pontiac being parted out?

Nice project. I really like the 56 four door hardtops. If I ever get another tri-five....that would be next on my list.

Nice and I bet you wished you had a stone guard so it didnt plaster the car. So you got rid of a 2dr for a 4dr?
