No shoulder and they measured more like 2 11/16 in total length.

The length from under the head to the end of the threads measured at 2 3/8 which is why you want to measure the bolts installed in the housing and make sure you have sufficient clearance to allow the bolts to torque down and stretch. Otherwise, they may bottom out and give you a false torque reading and a loose cap that cause the rear to come apart.

When I installed the cap kit I ran into that problem, bolts a speck too long. Used a thick grade 8 washer to gain the clearance needed for the bolts.

Wow, I thought that bolt lengths were always specified without the thickness of the head. They are these days. Maybe not back in the 50s. The bolt head thickness can vary but not on most.

I was going to suggest that you probably can't buy a 2-3/4" length bolt - it's not a standard size - so a 3" bolt shortened to fit might be the right thing - but it looks like a 2-1/2" bolt and then checking for bottoming is the right way to do this, because it may need to be shortened also.

Bolts were supposed to be measured the same way, bottom of head to end. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...57cmpc0641.htm

At least with the Fasten # 011514, 2 3/4" bolt, if you shortened it, you would run out of thread before tighten it. The # 0115213 (2 1/2") I went back for will screw into the carrier housing 1 1/4" using the carrier cap. I still will have 1/4" left before the bolt would bottom out, I think that should be fine. The new bolt is about 1/8" longer than the ordinal cap bolt.
