Very, very rare item. Mickey Thompson also made magnesium center sections for the Olds/Pontiac 9.3 and 37-56 Olds/Pontiac rear ends. They were all sold as just the empty housings, never as complete units.

The only cars back in the day running 9 inch rears were Fords that came with them, and even some of them were running the 57-64 Olds/Pontiac 9.3. Up until the late 70's, there was more aftermarket support for the Olds/Pontiac, Dana 60's, and Chrysler 8 3/4. The 9 inch didn't take off until the supply of the older rear ends began to dry up.

For price, strength, and aftermarket support, the 9 inch is the best rear available today. Its just not was was used back in the day.

Not true at my shop I have NEVER spent over $1200 building a diff, I own cars with Dana 60s, 12 bolts, 9.3 Olds, and 10 bolt all posi. Have spare core diffs for most for future. I ran a Ford 40 years ago and at that time it was cheaper to build a 12 bolt.

A couple things,
A member here (dragsix maybe?) had a recommend for some aftermarket parts for these pumpkins that are supposedly a lot stronger than the original setup. I wonder if a guy used those new parts in this mag case if it would approach the strength of the later GM 8.5 10 bolt rears? They seem to be able to handle much more than the 8.2 10 bolt and 55-64 assembly.

A local hotrod guy here started a hotrod mechanic's shop at about the end of the VN war, at the tail end of the 70's he had built a self-made jig to cut and narrow rear housings. He would cut and spline axles when it could be done too. Didn't take long til he had a shop full of 9 inchers to do for customers. I've always been a 12 bolt guy, but it wasn't long before word spread around here about the toughness of the 9 inchers he had built. In his later years rear-end housings themselves were about all he did, especially when the pro-street thing hit hard.

As stated I've been a 12 bolt guy forever, but what used to be 150 bucks to buy a used and complete posi version has gotten so expensive to purchase and then modify it's out of the question to buy one anymore. Dana 60's are the same now, plus those Dana's are so heavy that it's hard for even a couple old guys to move one around or load into a pickup. The thing I really liked about the original 55-64, 9 inchers, and the 9.3's (expensive now also) is the pumpkin. So very much easier than having to pull out an entire rear for work or changes to be done.
