Default Third Member Installation

I am installing a new Yukon Gear Third Member from Quick Performance into a new Quick Performance Housing. There recommendation is to use Ultra Black Permatex RTV and NO Gasket?

I guess I will do it this way. Worst that can happen is that it leaks and I have to pull the axles and redo it with a gasket.

How do you guys generally do this?

I installed a Quick Performance 9" housing and Yukon center section in my 57 last summer. I bought a Fel-pro gasket for it. I used Ultra black RTV on both sides of the gasket. Worked great, no leaks. It would probably work without the gasket but I didn't think the housing and carrier mating surfaces were perfect so I felt like it was good insurance to use the gasket.

Also, with the rtv, let it cure for like 48 hours before you expose the gasket/rtv to gear oil.

That is also the way some headers are sealed these days. Makes me nervous.

Big difference between a .125" thick header gasket and a .005" thick 3rd member gasket. On the other hand most exhaust manifolds go on without a gasket or sealer.

On the 3rd member, either way works.

The Permatex stuff is formulated to have a high percentage of cure far before 48 hours. I wouldn't hesitate to fill within an hour or two on a street driven car.

I've put a 9" 3rd member in a race car to change ratios - filled immediately with no leaks. You can tell how well it was sealed the next time you pull it to change ratios again.

I think I will use a gasket because I was installing the studs into the housing using a stack of washers and the washer on the bottom of the stack spun slightly and put a really minor gouge in the housing. Guess which stud: DEAD CENTER at the bottom. I touched it up lightly with a file to make sure it had no high spots but I can still feel it with my finger nail.
