One of the advantages of the moving the shift to the steering post is the additional leg room, and given I'll probably have 3 folks in the front from time-to-time, the leg room is an added benefit:

Realizing that a center console will take that room away, I'm still looking for ideas as to what can be put there. I'm also having AC installed, and the console might be able to accommodate the AC vent.

Thanks for any ideas.
Hello Jeff,

Just another thought on this...have you had a chance to remove the cover from the shifter to see what you are dealing with? The reason I ask this is because I had a very similar setup on my 56 One-Fifty which came with a B&M Hammer Shifter (which I detested).

I figured I would be stuck replacing the carpet, but to my great surprise, when I removed the shifter the carpet underneath was basically intact, except for four small holes for the mounting bolts and a slightly larger hole where the cable went through the floor. I sealed up the holes in the metal floor underneath, and after vacuuming the entire area thoroughly the holes in the carpet have practically disappeared. And after a few days the inpressions left in the carpet by the shifter housing had also blended in.

What I'm saying is you shouldn't assume that there will be a ginormous hole and damage left behind; take a look under the housing before you commit to a console, you may not need it!

In any case, good luck!

Thanks, and no! We haven't pulled the shifter out yet (keeping fingers crossed). Hopefully, it's as you suggest. Regardless, I'm buy floor mats anyway given I'd like to protect the carpet. I learned they make ones specifically for the tri-fives w/ front bench seats. They're one piece in the front, and I'm getting two for the back:

Again, I really appreciate the insights and advice guys!
