Default Customer Service? Not So Much....

I was putting floors into my 210 2-door wagon and ordered all 4 from Real Deal Steel specifically because in their ad they stated, in huge letters, 18 GUAGE STEEL!
When they arrived, they'd been drop shipped from another manufacturer. RDS didn't even make them. Okay, well, no big deal. I threw my micrometer on one of them to verify the thickness. It was nowhere near 18 gauge. More like 21-22 gauge (metric - imported).
I call up RDS and told them about it and their response was:
So?
I said that I paid for 18 gauge parts as advertized and wanted 18 gauge parts.
Their reply was that 18 gauge was no longer available.
I said, well, you're advertising it as such in huge letters on your website (they immediately fixed THAT.)
I told them that I wanted the difference in steel thickness, about 20%, refunded to me.
Nope, not happening.
I said then send a call tag for them as I'm returning them.
Well, you're just going to get the same thing from any other supplier.
That's not the point. I didn't get what I paid for.
I'll send a call tag so you can return them.

Never an explanation, never the slightest hint of apology, no recourse other than to return them. SO they'd rather spend $35 for the return shipping than to offer me the difference.
I feel that the people answering the phone should attend a customer service seminar perhaps. That was my last purchase from RDS.

The biggest mistake RDS made was claiming the parts were 18 gauge steel.

Fact is, there is no such thing and never will be. The factory floors were 19 gauge. Maybe some of the separate welded on braces were 18 gauge, or perhaps even 16 gauge. Replacement floors are similar. Also remember that when a piece of metal like that is formed, there will be many places that become thinner (stretched) as part of that process. There is nothing wrong with the floor parts on the market today as far as material.

The other half of this is that there are only two manufacturers of this stuff. Golden Star is what RDS sells, made in Asia. Many others sell Golden Star too.
CARS Inc. has the old EMI panel product line made in the US. There are also a number of retailers for that one.

I've got the complete floor pans, and a new trunk lid, qtr panels, splash and fender extensions, all from Golden Star. Nothing wrong w/ them. They fit well, and are accurately formed.

that is terrible CS.
but: if you can't get them a lot cheaper, maybe best to keep what you have. plus: if they fit and are nice, that would be a positive. never can tell what the next ones will be like.

They should have made you a reasonable offer and thanked you for letting them know their web page was wrong. At the very least they could have refunded you $35 instead of spending it on return shipping.
