Default Holley Sniper - Ignition Wire

Wiring up the Holley Sniper on the ‘55 and need to find a “clean” switched 12v power source that has power while cranking & run positions. Instructions say there should be no other accessories hooked to this wire.

What’s the best way to handle this? It’s a small block, hei with alternator.

Have the hyper spark going in once I get things up and running.

Thanks,
Jay

Use the IGN1 terminal on the ignition switch and jumper the IGN2 terminal to it. That will get you power in both start and run positions on the switch. Put anything else on the ACC terminal - that's what is usually done and should be - even without the Sniper.

I’ll check that but I feel like I may have wired the HEI that way. It specifically says to not hook to the ignition coil so I’m a little unsure where to go.

Wait for the HyperSpark Distributor, coil and box. It's hard to not get excited and want to get it running, but it's worth waiting. I know you didn't ask, but be SURE to run all the power wires to the battery ONLY. And make sure your grounds are perfect. My friend had bad things happen with the HEI with just the sniper.
Good luck.

I have the Hyperspark package but even the Sniper instructions recommend firing up on the existing ignition to limit the number issues with getting the unit installed and fired up. I tend to like that plan myself as I hate chasing problems from so many changes at one time.

Then I would fire it up per the instructions with your ignition. But what if someone was starting with a fresh engine and didn't have existing ignition? I don't expect you to answer that question. I am just thinking out loud.
Keep us posted .

Check the voltage while cranking. It should read 10.6 volts at least.

Seems like a relay off the battery would be the best way to get clean power to the Sniper. Use ign1 & 2 to energize the relay.

Thanks Acardon. That's what I was thinking. The Holley diagram shows all three "ignition" wires tied together so that's what I did to get it running yesterday. I can't imagine I'd need three separate relay's as there are three wires (Sniper, Spark Box & Distributor).

What's your thought there?

Thanks,
Jay.

I would run the Sniper off the relay and the ignition directly off the switch. Their intent is to separate the Sniper from any electrical noise source from the ignition.
