Default ** 56 Chevy steering box - update

OK, I have installed a CPP500 steering box (replacing the Delphi 600 box).

That seems to have resolved a number of the issues I was having with my steering box. The CPP500 box has more room between the rag joint coupler and the hole in the firewall for the steering column.

It has moved my steering wheel closer to the dash.

What I have now is 1 3/4 inches between the dash bezel for the steering column and the point where the steering column flares out for the tilt function.

I also have the Double D shaft sticking out of the rag joint about 1 inch. The Double D rag joint is about 1 inch deep, and the Double D shaft coming out of the Ididit column is about 2 inches long.

It looks like I can shorten the Double D shaft by 1 inch. THe would put the remainder of the Double D shaft fully into the rag joint, and move the steering column / wheel one inch closer to the dash.

That would be just about perfect.

I just need to double check with the Ididit people and make sure there are no issues with cutting 1 inch off off the end of the steering shaft.

I also had to shim the steering box by 1/4 inch on the rear mounting bolt so it lines up properly. That also seems to have worked fine.

Just some final tweaking to be done and I can move onto the next issue.

This may not make a difference, remember, there is a rubber sleeve that goes around the steering shaft and the dash mount and a grommet that goes around the column and instrument cluster. That will move the column down a small amount.

I placed mine at 1 inch to provide room for a column mounted tachometer bracket.

Default Steering box update

You all may recall my frustrations with the Borgeson Delphi 600 steering box in my 56 Bel Air 4 door sedan.

I ordered a CPP500 box, and it fit much better. More room between the steering coupler and the firewall.

I also ended up trimming about an inch off of the end of the Double D shaft on the end of the Ididit steering column.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with the end results.

I have about an inch between the instrument bezel and the point on the column where it flares for the tilt part, etc.

I can live with this.

I have a tachometer as part of my Dakota Digital instrument cluster.
