i spoke with my friend who is one of the best trans builders in the indy area & unlike me is still building transmissions every day his thoughts are also the governor but doesn't make sense with what was done he said you might want to drive the pin out of the gov gear & take it apart said that there is a small opening in the valve that might have something stuck in it & it would cause third gear starts good luck don't know if it's any help or not

Are you sure it's just not super soft shifts? My 350 shifts soft and can't feel them. If you don't have a tachometer hook one up and see if it shifts.

The only 3rd gear start I've seen was caused by melted direct and forward clutches..

normally with the direct & forward clutches burnt to the point they kind of weld themself together if you pulled it into manual low it will try to bind up & it shouldn't shift to second & third manually it's a unusual situation with what was done to it especially plus he said it was shifting fine before the converter & seal change. In manual low you bring the low reverse clutch on where in drive that clutch doesn't apply

If it's welded it's applied..

If both forward and direct clutches were "welded", it wouldn't have manual low or manual second. The transmission would lock up in manual low, as suggested. Also there would be no neutral and it would lock up in reverse too.

If the problem isn't in the governor, it's in the valve body. Probably a stuck shift valve.

the power flow is that the low reverse clutches only apply in reverse & manual low in drive range the low sprag is applied & the low reverse clutch isn't I don't remember all the power flow in all ranges any more i used to as that's what i did for a living back in the early seventies only do one every now & then for a friend If i was the OP i'd pull the pan see what things look like if it's not bad think i'd change the governor as you said about have to be that or a stuck valve

In the "drive" or D position, first gear is accomplished by the forward clutch being applied as well as the first gear sprag. Second gear is accomplished by the second gear clutches applied as well as the second gear sprag, the first gear sprag overruns in second gear. Third gear is accomplished by the direct clutch being applied, and the second gear sprag overruns. The forward clutch is applied in all forward gears.

In manual low, the low/reverse clutch is applied, as well as the forward clutch.

In manual second the second gear band is applied as well as the forward clutch.

If both sprags were broken, the car wouldn't move. This would be very rare to have both sprags broken. I've had the second gear sprag break, this results in starting out in first gear and eventually shifting to third gear. Very rare for the first gear sprag to break, but I guess it could happen. This would result in the car not moving.

In reverse, the low/reverse clutch as well as the direct clutch is applied.

sounds right but i couldn't t remember it all & didn't want to be inaccurate fortunately they still have manuals on at least the old stuff GM went to online only about the time I left the dealership in 2008 they used to send you a ton of paper manuals they also did away with the technical training centers a few years before that changing over to almost all distance learning at least when ever the equipment worked properly
