Default Crankshaft timing gear removal

Is there an alternative to the Kent Moore J-41558 tool that I can use to get the crankshaft timing gear off of a 5.3.

The KM tool is about $80 and i am probably only going to use it once.

I thought about buying a cheap 3-jaw puller and grinding the "hooks" on the jaws so they are thin enough to go behind the gear, but I don't know if that is risking damage to something else.

Wayne...Have you checked on renting one....Or is it something that is too specific and too new?

that's what I did but with a proto 2 jaw. I also drilled a small hole into the end of the original balancer bolt to keep the puller out of the end of the crank.

O'Reilleys nor AutoZone has anything that looks like it will work.

I already drilled a countersink into the head of the old bolt to keep the puller centered. i am replacing the original crank bolt with an ARP bolt.

I thought the 3 jaw I had would work but the hooks are too thick to go in there.

I think I will just buy a cheap one and grind it down.

How tight does that gear fit the shaft? Is it usually a bear to get off or is it just a matter of getting something that will fit in there to get hold of it?

Just buy a 3 or 2 jaw cheap unit and remove material till it will fit behind gear. It won't take much force to get it off. Just radius material removed on puller arms and don't remove to much if you can.
