Default Who has Factory right hand drive car?

Hi all, I would like to know how many others have got a factory right hand drive car, mine is a Canadian model 56 bel air hardtop pillar less.
I have been looking at trying to set up aircon in the car later, but because it is is "factory right hand drive" the aircon units that are made, are for left hand drive cars converted to right hand drive.. So fitting a unit to a factory right hand drive is near on impossible apparently, which I find hard to grasp to be honest.
I know mine didn't come with any dash bezels for vents or demister, apparently they didn't bother with the demister on the right hand drive version?

Has anyone fitted an aircon unit to a factory right hand drive car?

Are there any other surprises I should expect with a factory right hand drive car in the parts department?

Cheers
Santo

Mine is a Bel Air 4dr Hardtop RHD which was manufactured in Tarrytown NY as you will note on the cowl tag. I had it fitted with a RH, A/C supplied by a company that was in Selma, Texas called HOT ROD AIR.I purchased two sets for my Bel Air and my 60 Impala which are both RHD.I must state that ever since I had these installed, and that was in Feb 2009; I had no problems.I tried to call them two years ago and was told they were no longer in business.Their number was 210-651-0040.
This picture shows the installation of the evaporator.

I tried to run a poll on this site some two years ago trying to determine exactly what you are asking. I did not find a lot maybe because I did not find someone like you who would have an interest in that question.I wanted factory produced RHD's and asked members of those to show a cowl tag like i have in the other post. In South Africa there is mine and one other which has no cowl tag.How many of your kind are in Australia and New Zealand?

I have a Factory RHD, which is a CKD that comes under the General Motors Holden banner, not sure as to which plant here in Australia it was built though.

It's hard to get an online response about numbers, considering that so many owners are not on forums.

RHD cars were built from CKD forms in some countries, fully built RHD and then exported in some countries. I have found from experience that in Australia we had the four door 210 sedans in CKD form. Some unique features were that these sedans had real leather interiors, and all were 6 cyl 3 speed manual cars. We also had a number of 4 door Bel Airs and Sport sedans fully imported - like the 56 4 door sedan and sport sedan I posted here recently. These Bel Airs were either 6 or V8, and all manuals. From our research there were no autos offered for RHD, and I'm pretty sure the only heater option was one of the Smith's type of heaters.

Eddie Ford published stats for Aussie car registrations in the early issue of Custom Rodder. From memory the number of registrations for each of the 3 years from 1955-57 were around the 2000 mark. Ata Chevy Nats here about 20 years ago a group of us were chatting about the 4 door hardtops (both 56 and 57) here - long before the influx of imports. Between us we came up with a list of about 80 cars that we knew of - and they keep appearing out of sheds. My guess would be that there would have been between 100 and 200 of them delivered here.

Santo, surprises for RHD parts dept? As mentioned above, they were basic cars with few accessories. RHD steering parts can be hard to find, but I expect that all the parts are in your 56.

Cheers, Des

I have a RHD 56 4 door 210 with the GMH tags. It has a supercharged 350 that I rebuilt last year with some AFR heads an nice little roller cam. 700R4 trans, 9inch diff, 4 wheel discs. Despite factory RHD it has been fitted with a HQ front crossmember, steering and suspension which is much better geometry than the original king pin setup. I have almost finished fitting AC - I'll post some pics when it is complete. I used a vintage air Gen II compac unit and mounted the evaporator behind the dash on the left. It does fit but hangs below the dash a bit. I mounted the compressor high on the right of the engine using a billet specialities bracket, looks great. Braided hoses along the right inner guard to a diamond shaped 4-way bulkhead fitting then across behind the dash to the evaporator. I have built a centre console to house some centre AC outlets, gauges and a vintage air 4 knob steamline control panel. Vintage air 492056 louvres are fantastic and fit perfectly.

The braided hose is from aeroflow and the #8 hose was shit - the fittings didn't fit properly! They have refused any help and say it was a fitment issue, despite the fact that I put the #6 and #10 hoses together with no problems. This is where my hold up is now. My advice is to keep away from them and pay the extra for the vintage air braided hose if you want to go that way.

Cost - pick a number and double it. Time - more than you think.

I have a Vintage Air in my 56 Delivery its not factory RHD but it is RHD.
It looks to be the same as 56Crazy has but im not sure. I got the evaperator off Ebay for $40.00 and it was supposedly out of a mid 60 LHD Mustang.
I have a friend who fits air and he gave me the vacuum operated switchs for it for free.
I havent hooked up the AC hoses yet but the demister and heater work great.
I even have the vacuum switchs connected to the original 56 standard heater knobs.
The evaperator does hang down below the dash about 3" but its not really noticable. The car is a 150 so I mounted one outlet each side of the dash and if i dont like it that way I can allways put the dash trim on it and the holes will be covered. I also have an out let in the glovebox along with an oil and temp gauge.
I dont have much room behind the dash now as I also have the wipers mounted inside as well as everything else that goes behind there.
I did everything when the car was on a rottiserie which made it much easier to mount everything then just fitted it all after the car was painted.
I have tried to take some photos but my battery is flat o i will get some when its charged.

Nice pic, John. Did you take it yourself, or is it by a photographer?
