Coker Tire—Special Tires for Your Tri-Five

Coker Tire has been around since 1958, when your Tri-Five was still fairly new. The founder, Harold Coker started out in Athens, Tennessee, but moved his operation to Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1960 as the area’s first BF Goodrich dealer and installer. The business operated as a regular tire and service center, until Harold began seeking out discontinued tire molds and putting them back into production. During the 1960’s, most auto restorers were fooling with Ford Model T’s and pre-World War I vehicles, so tire availability was non-existent. That area is where Harold started, and when things started getting hectic, he brought in his son, Corky to run the “antique division” of the business.

Corky had just gotten out of college, and was eager to take his father’s business to the next level. He had no idea that it would expand so significantly, but the popular line of vintage-style bias ply tires offered period correct style and fitment for restorations. As Corky continued to find old molds and have them refurbished to modern standards, he also made licensing agreements with companies like BF Goodrich, Firestone and U.S. Royal. This allowed Coker Tire to produce exact replicas of tires that were originally on the market in the ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s and beyond.

In 1995, Coker Tire had one of its biggest moments, as it introduced the world’s first wide whitewall radial tire. These tires were intended for collector vehicles and the modern radial construction ensured excellent handling, safety and tread wear. Then, in 2013, another milestone put Coker Tire on top of the tire world—the introduction of the American Classic “bias look” radial tire. It is a tire that has the vintage appearance of a bias ply design with the modern construction of a radial.

In addition to whitewall tires, Coker Tire produces blackwall tires, redline tires, gold line tires and more. Even though radial tires are very popular, Coker Tire is still the leader in original-style bias ply tires with authentic brands and styles. Recently, Coker Tire has started offering high quality steel wheels to go along with its vast selection of tires. Manufactured in the USA by Specialty Wheel and Roadster Wire Wheels, you will find a lot of options in Coker Tire’s wheel lineup, including some wheels that are specifically for Tri-Five Chevrolets.

Coker Tire’s world headquarters is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The 100-year old building is packed with vintage automobilia, and includes a beautiful museum. Also located in Chattanooga is Coker Tire’s main distribution center, which occupies 350,000 square feet of warehouse space. Coker Tire also has a West Coast storefront and distribution center in City of Industry, Cailfornia, spanning more than 100,000 square feet. Call 800-251-6336 or go to www.cokertire.com to check out the entire selection and see why Coker Tire is the world’s largest supplier of tires and wheels for collector vehicles!

Bias Ply Tires
Restorers and purists use bias ply tires for the sake of authenticity. You’ll be pleased to know that Coker Tire’s line of bias ply tires are made in original, refurbished molds, which ensures proper appearance and safety. Coker Tire offers bias ply tires in the following brands: BF Goodrich, Firestone, U.S. Royal, Excelsior, Coker Classic and more!

Radial Tires
Radial tires are for the Tri-Five Chevy enthusiast who wants to get out and DRIVE! While bias ply tires are certainly safe, there is no question that a radial tire rides smoother and offers much greater tread life. The modern radial whitewall tires from Coker Tire are built from day one to be a wide whitewall—it is not an afterthought, or a process that is applied to an existing tire. Much like the bias ply tire manufacturing process, white rubber is laid into the tire’s carcass, long before the tire is placed in the mold. This ensures a safe, reliable tire. Coker Tire offers radial tires in the following brands: American Classic, BF Goodrich, Excelsior, Coker Classic and more!

Bridging the Gap—the Bias Look Radial
In 2013, Coker Tire introduced the world’s first “bias look” radial tire. With the narrow tread profile and piecrust shoulder, the American Classic bias look radial tire was a huge hit, and won SEMA’s Best New Product award in 2013. The tires are available in wide whitewall and blackwall configurations, and they’re available in nine sizes to fit 13-, 14- and 15-inch wheels. The best part about the new bias look tire is that Coker Tire made sure to include two authentic Tri-Five Chevy fitments, 6.70R15 and 7.50R14. These tires are made in the USA, and have received great feedback from customers around the world.

Wheels
Coker Tire offers a full line of high quality steel wheels, manufactured by Specialty Wheel and Roadster Wire Wheels. The wheels are design with OEM fitment in mind, but they are also available in a wide range of custom sizes and designs. The wheels are made in the USA with the best equipment available. Whether you want Chevy Rallye wheels, OE Style steel wheels, or possibly a custom design, Coker Tire has the right choice for your Tri-Five. In fact, Coker Tire is now stocking OE Tri-Five wheels, which have the correct dimpling around the outer edge for original hubcap fitment. Coker Tire offers OE Tri-Five wheels in 14- and 15-inch diameter, with widths ranging from 5 to 7 inches. It is often suggested to go to a 6-inch wide wheel (or wider) when running radial tires on your Tri-Five.

Free Mounting and Balancing
Coker Tire offers FREE mounting, balancing and nitrogen inflation when you purchase a set of tires and wheels together. This saves you the time and money required to take your tires and wheels to be mounted by your local tire shop. This also ensures that the tires and wheels are mounted and balanced properly. Our tire technicians ONLY handle specialty tires and wheels, so you can count on quality service and a smooth ride.

Original Tri-Five Sizing
When the new-for-1955 Chevrolet rolled off the showroom floor, it had 6.70-15 bias ply tires, mounted to 15x5-inch wheels. Blackwall tires were standard, but customers could choose wide whitewalls. Chevrolet offered the same size tire and wheel packages in 1956, but then stepped down to a 14-inch wheel for the 1957 model year. This resulted in the use of 7.50-14 bias ply tires, which were still available in blackwall and wide whitewall. Coker Tire offers 6.70-15 and 7.50-15 bias ply tires in BF Goodrich, Firestone, and U.S. Royal brands.

Radial Tire Cross Reference
If you’re looking to upgrade to radial whitewall tires on your Tri-Five, Coker Tire suggests a 205/75R15 for 1955 or 1956 models, and 205/75R14 for 1957 models. This cross reference is based on the diameter of the tire, as well as the section width. Some Tri-Five enthusiasts opt for larger tires, which are available from Coker Tire. Radial tire brands with Tri-Five fitments include American Classic, BF Goodrich and Coker Classic.

Custom Fitments
Coker Tire is known for its OE fitments, but it also offers tires and wheels for custom applications. The Tri-Five world is full of custom builds, including gassers, drag cars, slammed customs and more. Coker Tire has tires such as the Firestone Dragster cheater slick, a full line of M&H Racemaster tires, and Pro Trac tires for the Pro Street look. Also note that Coker Tire offers wide whitewall (and select blackwall) radials in large sizes, such as 285/70R15 for the Tri-Five enthusiast who has relocated the leaf springs and made room for wide rubber
