Default straight axle shock question

When putting my 57 truck axle under my frame the shock topic came up. Do you mount them at a 15 Degree towards the front like it was under the truck or straight up?

Either works just fine as long as the mounting point isn't in a bind. I always use a little angle, but have had a number of friends who put them straight up and worked well too.

Can you think why they lean them forward not backward?

They usually lean the top towards the end that has the shackle, but there's exceptions to that I've seen too. Guessing since the spring moves the axle towards the end that has the shackle, that puts the axle moving the shock in a more direct travel path.
But most axles don't move more than 1/2"-3/4" total, so the angle some car makers put into them is much more than that. On coilover shocks I had a custom builder tell me he leans his shocks at angles (towards center of the vehicle) so the pressures exerted on them have more leverage against the travel, and as one wheel travels up it's also more in line perpendicular to shock angle. But he also showed me how he makes his top crossmember with multiple upper shock mounting holes so he can lean the shocks to different positions to tune the chassis, and adjust ride height. I've never done it myself, as I just put them at a little angle and call it good. I do use adjustable brackets in the rear to raise or lower a car with coilover shocks.

Most builders and car makers angle the top in, not forward or back. But it depends on the lower mounting point direction as to which way you can angle it.

Most straight axel cars back in the day had oil shocks. Now all you can find are gas shocks which seem to be very stiff. Putting a shock at an angle seems to kill the efficiency of the shock. My 55 chev gasser with bias ply tires thump thumps on the road slats. Just finished a 37 chev gasser for a friend of mine. I mounted the shocks at an angle towards the front moving the upper shock about 2" farther from the bottom. That car thump thumps a whole lot less.

So the consensus is to angle them forward. Thanks all
